Koorkerk, Old Church, Abdij, Middelburg, The Netherlands

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middelburg_Abbey:

Choir church (Koorkerk)
Around 1300 the abbey's old church building was replaced with the Choir church (Koorkerk), which is physically divided from adjacent New Church. The church comprises a tall chancel of seven arches in length, with a five sided apse to the east of the choir stalls. As part of the rebuilding after its destruction by fire in 1568, elaborate roof vaulting was added.

A prominent feature of the town's profile is the abbey church tower known as "Lange Jan" ("Tall John") on the south side of the Choir church. The lower part of the tower dates from the fourteenth century. The more elaborate higher parts were added in 1712 and then reconstructed following the destruction of 1940.

Excerpt from the plaque:

Two brothers Johan and Cornelis Evertsen are entombed here. Once they were buried in the Oude Kerk (Old Church) until this church was demolished in the 19th century. The mausoleum, created by the famous sculptor Verhulst, initially moved to the Nieuwe Kerk and after the renovation of the 1950's was taken to its present location.

Preekstoel Koorkerk Middelburg

The Koorkerk is the oldest of the two Middelburg Abbey Churches. The entrance is to the right of the Lange Jan, the 86m. tall tower that dominates the abbey complex. On the other side of the Lange Jan is the Nieuwe Kerk. The intermediate part, at the foot of the Lange Jan, is known as the Wandelkerk.
In the Koorkerk there is a 17th century pulpit from the Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam. The freestanding octagonal tub is placed on a hard stone base and is covered by a heavy sounding board.

Graftombe rooms-koning Willem II

After the death of Roman king and Count of Holland William II (1227-1256), many years passed before he could be properly buried. That ultimately happened in the Middelburg Abbey. His grave monuments here were lost several times. It is even uncertain whether the grave of William II is (still) in Middelburg.

The Koorkerk in Middelburg is home to the oldest organ case in the Netherlands. The interior of the organ in question has been in storage for years. There are plans to move it to Utrecht and reunite it with the interior. The instrument was built in 1479 by Peter Gerritsz.

(www.wikipedia.nl)

Lange Jan, Abdij, Middelburg, The Netherlands

Excerpt from www.gpswalking.nl/wandeling/574/stadswandeling-middelburg:

In the middle of the historic center of Middelburg is the Lange Jan. The Lange Jan is the tower of the former flooding of Middelburg Abbey. The tower is 90.5 meters high with which it falls just outside the top ten of the highest church towers in the Netherlands. The oldest part of the tower was built in the 14th century. In the following centuries, the tower has been restored and enlarged several times. During the 1940 bombing, the tower was badly damaged. The tower was then rebuilt in a somewhat sober style.

The Lange Jan is one of the most popular attractions in Middelburg. The tower can be climbed to about half. The 207 steps lead you to a plateau that is open to the public. From this plateau you have a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings. In clear weather you can even see the different islands that belong to Zeeland and Zeeland Flanders.

Middelburg: Koorkerk by harry_nl

Middelburg: Koorkerk

The Koorkerk in Middelburg in its current form was built around 1375 as part of an abbey. After the Reformation it became a protestant church. As in most reformed churches the pulpit is in the centre of the church, symbolising the central position of the reading of the Bible and the sermon in the worship services. It was destroyed in World War II but rebuilt afterwards.
