Vintage Passenger Rail Cars #1

The two-tone gray paint job is New York Central, but that railroad never ran dome cars, even on the 20th Century Limited.

Vintage Passenger Rail Cars #2

The two-tone gray paint job is New York Central. The observation car, instead of a rounded, windowed rear, has a platform, perfect for whistle-stop political campaigns. Two beautiful cars.

Penn Central eastbound express passenger train led by a former Pennsylvania Railroad GG-1 locomotive is operating on the former New Haven Railroad electrified main line just after departing the station at Stamford, Connecticut 1969. Directly behind this train on the same platform track is a Pullman Standard stainless steel MUT. It appears that the last car on this train is a Pullman Standard stainless steel combine running in the reverse direction as a rider coach. In the background you can see busy highway I-95 and the downtown area of the city.

This photo image was captured on film by Bob Hughes from his perch in Tower SS38.

New Haven Railroad EMD FL-9 locomotives # 2059 & # 2026, on a bright sunny day, lead a westbound passenger train with an ATSF stainless steel Budd RPO through the snow toward tower SS38 in Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. This had to be a very recent snow fall because it is so clean and highway I-95 to the left is also covered with clean snow. The leased Santa Fe stainless steel RPO blends in nicely with the New Haven stainless steel parlor car. This train is operating on a station platform track and will soon be at a station platform. Bob Hughes captured this image on film from his tower location.

New Haven Railroad GE EP-5 motor # 376 & EMD FL-9 locomotive # 2017 lead their respective passenger trains westbound at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. The FL-9 along with its train is operation on a station platform track, while the EP-5 and its train is operating on an express track that by-passes the station. By the passenger equipment indicated on the EP-5 led train, this is most likely a connection train with the PRR for joint operation. The highway I-95 overpass bridge is seen in the background. This photo should be titled, "The Race Is On!"

Bob Hughes, a tower-man, captured this image on film from his tower SS38.

New Haven Railroad eastbound passenger train with head-end Southern Railway stainless steel RPO-Baggage car Lenoir City # 1725 included within the consist as it passes tower SS38 in Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. This train most likely was handed over from the Pennsylvania Railroad in New York City at Penn Station because there is a modernized P-70 coach in the consist. The REA box car coupled to the other end appears to be a former troop sleeper. This lightweight stainless steel mostly smooth side RPO-Baggage Car was built by Budd in 1941 for the SR Tennessean and was of a design that utilized both rivet and welded construction. The Tennessean operated from Washington, D.C. to Memphis Tennessee and was handled for 200 miles along its route by the N&W. Connections were made in Washington to transfer the coaches and the Pullmans to PRR trains for access to New York City and beyond with connection to NYNH&H RR trains to Boston. Of interest the lightweight stainless steel cars used on the Tennessean train were all built by Budd, except that silver-gray painted heavyweight Pullman cars were used in the consist with no lightweight sleepers included.
Over on I-95 there is an old flat faced red tractor hauling a Chicago Express trailer.

Bob Hughes captured on film this car from his elevated tower location.

New Haven Railroad EMD FL-9 EDER-5 # 2018 & another FL-9 locomotive, lead a passenger train at South Hampton Street, Boston, Massachusetts, April 12, 1966. It appears that the stainless steel Pullman built combine coupled behind the second locomotive is a dead-head car, that is followed by the train's typical head-end cars. This photo came from my Houser photo collection, however, the original photographer's name is unknown.

The train's consist is a mixture of heavyweight & lightweight NYC cars. Notice the large four track bi-directional signal bridge situated over the train. It must be hard times for lead locomotive # 2008, because the first zero in the number board is missing, and all you can see is the light bulb. This photo came from my personal collection.

New Haven Railroad EMD FL-9's (EDER-5a), led by locomotive # 2038, is seen in the electric zone while stopped with a west bound passenger train at the Stamford Station platform in Connecticut, 1960's era. The trains consist contains a mixture of heavyweight head end equipment, an Osgood-Bradley American Flyer coach and what appears to be the modern Pullman Standard post war stainless steel sheathed cars. Located behind the train is a so called washboard MU car built by Pullman Standard in 1954. Notice the famous New Haven Railroad style of triangular catenary in use at this location. This photo came from my collection, however, the photographer's name that took this photo is unknown.

New Haven Railroad Shore Line passenger trains, one led by a single ALCO PA-1 DER-3a class diesel electric locomotive, are stopped at the Route 128 Station, near Boston, Massachusetts, 1960's era. This station was a favorite with commuters in the Boston area. You can see the engineers cap and elbow sticking outside the cab window. Coach 8667 is sitting directly across from the locomotive. This photo is from my personal collection, however, the original photographer's name is unknown.
