An exceptionally rare silver double stater of Metapontum featuring a portrait of the city's mythical founder, Leukippos. He wears a helmet with a relief of Nike driving a quadriga (four-horse chariot) and a hippocampus (sea horse) at the bottom side. The horsehair crest of the helmet is barely suggested by a row dots (obscured on this coin) around the top. Behind the head is a protome of a lion, with the letters AΠH (APE).
The name Leukippos literally means 'owner of a white horse', identifying him as a member of the wealthy elite.
The detail on this coin is mind-boggling, particularly the well-defined relief image of Nike's chariot on his helmet, particularly at such a small size.
Greek, from Metapontum, about 334 BCE.
