183/R365 - Cookeville Engine No. 509 - Cookeville Train Depot - Cookeville, Tennessee

Located at the Cookeville Railroad Depot, Engine #509 is a 4-6-0 ten-wheeler steam locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1913. The 4-6-0 designation is a classification of steam locomotives by wheel arrangement, having four leading wheels on two axles in a leading bogie (or chassis) and six powered & coupled driving wheels on three axles with the absence of trailing wheels. This engine was originally used by the Louisiana & Arkansas Railway and was acquired by the Cookeville Depot Museum in 2002 from the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. At this time, its appearance was modified to match contemporary Tennessee Central engines.

This photo was taken in 2013 during my previous Project 365…please visit my album for this “REMASTERED” Project 365 as I revisit each day of 2013 for additional photos to share!!

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D5200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

Louisiana and Arkansas Railway No. 99 (2-8-0 Consolidation); Built 1919 by Baldwin Locomotive Works.

This engine was used in local freight and branch line service. The 2-8-0 “consolidation” wheel arrangement was developed in the 1870s for freight service. A popular configuration, it permitted a larger boiler carried on 8 drivers to yield a great deal of pulling power. The two smaller wheels ahead of the drivers guided the engine at higher speeds. In 1954, No. 99 was retired and abandoned in the swamps until discovered by IRM in 1971.
