To express somebody's fondness for medium-brown brick veneer in the year 1980: a 14-story apartment building!

Despite being a single building it is named in the plural: "Central Towers." Ridiculous!

In downtown Rochester, Minnesota, on September 3rd, 2023, was the Central Towers apartment building containing subsidized senior housing at the northeast corner of 1st Avenue Northwest and 2nd Street Northwest, built in 1980 according to Olmsted County's online property records viewer.

Nonsensically named the "Crystal Towers" was a beige apartment building in Winston-Salem. by Tim Kiser

Nonsensically named the "Crystal Towers" was a beige apartment building in Winston-Salem.

The 196 elderly residents of Crystal Towers plead in unison to the building's owner, the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem (HAWS): "We all live in the same building. There are not multiple towers. Beige bricks are not crystal. Why is a government agency misusing common words with widely understood meanings."

No I'm just kidding. Here is a news article from 2023 that details the building's actual problems.

According to the official documentation of the Downtown Winston-Salem Historic District, "the eleven-story Crystal Towers building is characterized by its alternating vertical bands of brick and window openings that are flanked by projecting vertical cast concrete elements, as well as concrete beltcourses that delineate each floor and a concrete cornice." Okay!

TURN AND FACE THE STRANGE HIGHRISE of senior apartments in downtown New London. by Tim Kiser

TURN AND FACE THE STRANGE HIGHRISE of senior apartments in downtown New London.

It was the Munsey Building housing the Mohican Hotel, and now it is "The Mohican" and contains subsidized senior apartments. The brownish-orange part was built 1896-1898, and the top floors were built in 1916.

My photo assignment was to situate the building at the center of a townscape.

"ALL WASTE."

One of the things people like best about the city of Kansas City, Kansas, is: The tallest building in the city's downtown was built in 1951, of all years. Look at those bricks, and that limestone.

A senior housing highrise from 1981! by Tim Kiser

A senior housing highrise from 1981!

It being from 1981 and this being the U.S., I keep imagining I'm seeing "Bette Davis Eyes" looking at me from every balcony and window.

This being senior housing, they're Bette's eyes from late-in-life.

At karaoke or wherever, my style of singing the chorus of "Bette Davis Eyes" is to insert a quick falsetto "Whee!" between the words "got" and "Bette":

She's got--whee!--Bette Davis eyes

Low Income Senior Housing - How to Find It by ethanscottsr

Low Income Senior Housing - How to Find It

Low income senior housing is a very broad topic and the term “Low Income” can be quite relative. Something that is affordable to one senior household may not be affordable to another. For the most part, however, an elderly person (or household) that is on a low, fixed monthly income that receives no other outside financial support and has less than $5,000 in assets is usually considered to be a low income senior household. Beyond that, each program will impose specific income and age limits along with other eligibility criteria to determine whether they qualify for that particular program.

A 1981 balconies building with a side of windowlessness in Colorado.

According to my research, the U.S.'s ~25-30-year period of construction of imposing concrete- or brick-façaded apartment tower blocks reached its end in the 1980s. From the late 1980s, high-rise apartment buildings would generally have glass façades, and their availability would mainly be restricted to rich people. I assume Ronald Reagan's people had something to do with this.
