"Sewer Creek," it's called. by Tim Kiser

"Sewer Creek," it's called.

The crafty local people named it Sewer Creek to shoo outsiders away from discovering its beauty, which they wanted to have all to themselves. It is an olive green jewel.

In Hudson Township in Macon County, Missouri, on March 26th, 2022, Sewer Creek as viewed from the south side of a bridge on Vine Street Road.

Sewer Creek flows to Brush Creek, which flows to the Middle Fork Salt River, which converges with the North Fork Salt River to form the Salt River, which flows to the Mississippi River.

"Get down on your hands and knees, touch your lips to the water's surface and take a big slurp. Try not to fall in. You will get muddy but don't worry about it; we'll lay down some towels in the passenger seat for the drive home."

Let spectacular views of the East Fork Little Chariton River be one of the things you remember most about Macon County, Missouri.

But do not forget to disdain Macon Countians for their ongoing worship of Nathaniel Macon, a North Carolina politician famed for his enthusiastic proslavery activism.

The local people could decide to change the name of their county if they wanted to, but they do not!

Yea BNSF is owned by the Berkshire Hathaway insurance company, alongside Dairy Queen Corp., Duracell Batteries Corp., Fruit of the Loom Underpants Corp., and more and more and more. Do you like that?

Maybe the green patch at the left is a non-native species, out of step with the local plant behaviors at this time of year.

Ah the Chariton River, huge and brown and rural and famous. by Tim Kiser

Ah the Chariton River, huge and brown and rural and famous.

According to the Soil Survey of Macon County, Missouri (1995), this stretch of the Chariton River was constructed in "the early 1900s" as part of a drainage project that involved relocating the river from its natural winding course to a straightened channel. Did the project win any awards I wonder.

I present to you a visual counterpart to the toponym "East Fork Little Chariton River." by Tim Kiser

I present to you a visual counterpart to the toponym "East Fork Little Chariton River."

Now if somebody tells you that you were born onto a muddy towel on the banks of the East Fork of the Little Chariton River, or that your great grandpa's baptism was a grotesquely embarrassing full immersion in the soupy, olive-colored, poop-smelling waters of the East Fork of the Little Chariton River, you'll be able to go online and see a picture of that river. This is an improvement upon how things were before.
