Baker Island Lighthouse is located on a small island off the coast of Salem, Massachusetts, and it offers a stunning view from the water. As you approach the island, you'll see the iconic lighthouse standing tall at the highest point, surrounded by lush greenery and a rocky coastline.
The island itself is relatively small, and you can see the entire circumference of the island from the water. Near the lighthouse, you'll find a small beach, where boats can pull up on the rocks. only the official tours can disembark to explore the island. The surrounding waters can be calm or storm tossed depending on the whim of the sea. during the summer you can see many small boats and kayaks cruising around the island.
The view from the water is peaceful and serene, and it's easy to see why this area is a popular spot for fishing and boating. Overall, Baker Island Lighthouse is a beautiful sight to behold, and it's a must-visit for anyone who loves the ocean and enjoys stunning natural scenery.
The original lighthouse on Marblehead Neck was a traditional white tower with a keeper's house. But as newer summer houses were being built in the area, the original tower was less able to be seen by mariners. So in 1895 the existing lighthouse was built. Originally Marblehead light had a fresnel lens but now the lighthouse has a plastic optic. The light was automated in 1960 and the land surrounding the lighthouse is now a park.
Marblehead is a sailing mecca and a picturesque town with many eighteenth century homes and narrow, winding streets. Every year, crowds gather on Marblehead Neck to watch the passing sailboat races. Many people have speculated how much more scenic this picture would be if Marblehead Light was a traditional lighthouse instead of a metal skeleton tower. Edward Rowe Snow wrote in The Lighthouses of New England, " ..it is to be realized that lighthouses are for utility and not for beauty, but in this case it is especially unfortunate that beauty and utility were not combined." To many lighthouse fans, Marblehead Light is unique in New England and thus possesses its own charm.
Cape Ann Light Station on Thacher Island was the last set of lighthouses to be built under colonial rule and the first that instead of marking a harbor entrance, it marks a navigational hazard. People love to try for the moon rising behind one or the other of the twin lights. If you use a long telephoto lens you can compress the distance between the lighthouse and the moon, making it seem like the moon is much larger than it is with a shorter telephoto lens. The human eye compensates like a long telephoto lens so you are able to gget closer to what the human eye sees.
