Here were yellow bricks from circa 1950 and window awnings from circa 2020, at the former Medical Arts Building in Ottumwa, Iowa.

In downtown Ottumwa, Iowa, on October 27th, 2020, was 118 W 3rd St (built circa 1950; identified as the Medical Arts Building in the 1951 Ottumwa city directory) on the south side of West 3rd Street, east of North Washington Street.

According to Google Streetview, the awnings were installed no earlier than August 2019.

Here was a separator pier for twin staircases to medical offices. Very classy.

This one is classy with its polished panels of pink-and-gray speckled granite. "Let Your Love Flow," I call it.

The building is from 1963, but the surface of the wall is from sometime later. The original wall can be seen in an Ed Ruscha photo from 1974: Look for the two staircases at the lower right of the picture, immediately to the right of the "not a through street" sign.

I associate polished panels of pink granite with the 1980s. Maybe these are from the 1980s.

Ed Ruscha was here in 2007 too.

Built right up agin one another!

This is in Freeport, Illinois. Real estate websites such as "Spokeo" assert that the building on the left was built in 1927, and the building on the right was built in 1915. That looks about right, right?

FOR FUN, I viewed Freeport city directories at ancestrylibrary.com. That database has a huge gap in coverage between 1923 and 1948, but in 1948 and 1960 (the latest available), the building on the left is identified as the Freeport Union Bldg (A F of L), housing various local union offices and the Freeport Labor Club. According to Google Streetview, Cherokee's Pub was located in the building in 2007, and the green paint was applied sometime between August 2007 and August 2012. According to online news reports, a bar named Munzy's was here later, and closed in 2015; and a bar named the Signature Lounge opened circa 2017.

In the 1919 city directory, the building on the right is identified as a "Medical Building" and "Emergency Hospital," with a physician and dentist listed as additional occupants. In 1948 and 1960, only a single doctor's office is listed. Nowadays it's an apartment building.

R. J. Hill Building

Robert J. (1864-1930) and Kate Elizabeth (Breggan) Hill came to Palacios in 1904, soon after its founding. Contractor J. G. Bontrager built this concrete block commercial building for them in 1910. It originally housed a mercantile store with living quarters on the upper floor. Later uses included medical offices, a Depression-era canning kitchen, American Legion hall, Montgomery Ward store and a museum. Featuring elements of the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the Hill Building remains a prominent structure in downtown Palacios. (2000) (Marker No. 12436)

Construction, Cedar Alley - San Francisco, CA by Rex Mandel

Construction, Cedar Alley - San Francisco, CA

Part of three photos showing some of the construction of a medical office building for most of the block bounded by Polk Street and Van Ness Avenue on the east and west and Cedar and Geary Streets on the north and south. This building (now completed) created medical offices supporting the a new Hospital (also, now completed) across Van Ness Avenue (the building under construction in the background).

With construction in this area going apeshit, the disruption/change to this neighborhood has, so far, been enormous and neither the hospital nor this office building were even completed. The homeless in the neighborhood are visibly, being driven into the streets and you see many of them wandering about aimlessly. On a personal level my ophthalmologist moved to a nearby, cement, office building. Built in the 80s, it is as characterless as it is nondescript.

Finally, the geotagged map says this neighborhood is "Lower Nob Hill." Lower Nob Hill is a recent, bullshit appellation created by pimping real estate personnel to try and give cachet to this traditionally, down and out neighborhood. In reality, this area is part of Polk Gulch, a subset of the Tenderloin and closer to Russian Hill and Pacific Heights, both of which are easily as wealthy as Nob Hill.
