Used from 1983 to Oct. 1990 in the East German Air Force and belonged to the 9th Fighter Squadron "Heinrich Rau" at Peenemünde.
The F-104G is displayed in a "Zero-Length Launch" configuration with a solid-fuel rocket booster unit.
For takeoff, the pilot runs up the J79 engine to full thrust, then light the rocket motor. Within four seconds after ignition, the F-104G would be flying at 482 km/h (300 mph).
