Under the skyline of Birmingham's city centre, Cardiff Cantons (86A) recently delivered BR Brush Type 4 Co-Co diesel electric locomotive No. D 1730 (47 786) accelerates away from the Snow Hill tunnels into the sunshine with the characteristic plume of exhaust whilst hauling 1O35, the re routed 'Pines Express' from Manchester to Bournemouth.
Note: the Rotunda building was nearing completion, Marks and Spencer's upper floors gave great views of both railways, Littlewoods, the Moor Street warehouse was nearing the end of its life, the lower LNW/Midland lines to Birmingham New Street station were electrified and the locomotive is still in service with West Coast Railways.
