(Province of Québec, Canada)

The Man Who Planted Trees

The 1987 film "The Man Who Planted Trees", by Montréal filmmaker Fréderic Back, celebrates the single-handed efforts of one man, Elzéard Bouffier, who toils to improve his environment.

Out of a desolate territory, the dedicated efforts of this generous shepherd make bloom a vibrant forest.

The desert is depicted by the rock in which Elzéard Bouffier plants his maple trees, whose canopy grow to form a rainbow symbolizing hope and rebirth. The rainbow and the maple do not just lend themselves well to the special effect of mosaiculture, but they are also emblems of Québec, where the forests don flamboyant colours every autumn. Furthermore, the horses that gallop through the flowering prairie represent liberty and a return to life.

Gifu City (Japan)

Gifu City, loved by Lord Oda Nobunaga

In 1567, Lord Nobunaga conquered the Mino area and lived in the city he named Gifu. He introduced new strategies, such as checkpoint stations and starting free market. In that way, he built up Gifu as one of the biggest castle towns.
We have expressed the theme "The Symphony of People and Nature" by painting a relaxed Lord Nobunaga during his busy days. From the foot of Mt. Kinka, he is watching cormorant fishing in the Nagara River, a tradition which has been carried out since the eighth century.
This year Gifu City, in its 120th anniversary, will make rapid progress in the future by promoting "Slow Life City".

Osaka City (Japan)

Aqua Metropolis Osaka

Nakanoshima Island which represents "Aqua Metropolis Osaka" was the first park constructed in the city. It is the perfect place for the citizens to relax and enjoy the beautiful harmonious scenery of greenery and water. Osaka City Central Public Hall and Yodoya-bashi Bridge are located in the centre of the island. The Central Public Hall was refurbished with donations from citizens. As the Bridge was built by Osaka's merchants and the design for the rebuilding of the bridge was chosen by citizens, Yodoya-bashi Bridge represents city development through the creativity and the dedication of the citizens.
The scenery of the surrounding trees reflecting on the surface of the water at Nakanoshima Island is one of the symbols of "Aqua Metropolis Osaka" with its uniquely special beauty.

Parks & Greens Association (Japan)

Hamamatsu is blessed with an abundence in nature, with the Tenryu River to the East, Lake Hamana to the West, the Akaishi Mountains to the North and Enshu Coast to the South. This exhibit shows the pine or "matsu, which is not only the symbol of Hamamatsu City, but is also the traditional backdrop portrayed on the "Noh" stage.
The front of the exhibit shows dune plants and waves lapping against the Enshu Coast, with the aim of drawing attention to the reality of receding sand dunes. It is hoped that from this exhibit you will gain a sense of Japan's culture and the spiritual essence of the pine scenery.

Serena, the Dugong

The dugong is a sea mammal listed as an endangered species, and is said to be the model of the story "A Little Mermaid" by "Hans Christian Andersen".
Baby Serena was found alone near Palawan Island, a famous resort in the Philippines, after a big typhoon in 1986. Serena was in danger of dying of hunger, however people had no idea how to feed a baby dugong.
Then President Aquino offered baby Serena to Toba Aquarium in Japan to take care of her. President aquino named the baby dugong "Serena" and she was flown to Toba by a special plane hired by Toba Aquarium.

Fly up High! "Sagami-no-Odako"
("The King-sized Kite of Sagami")

This work is based on the traditional and cultural craftwork "Sagami-no-Odako"

("The King-sized Kite of Sagami") and "Sagami River; a river starting from the foot of
Mt. Fuji, flowing through Sagamihara and down into Sagami Bay.
The ranges of the Tanzawa Mountain (the highest mountain peaks of Kanagawa
Prefecture), the "Odako" flying high up the Sagami River, the City Flower
"Hydrangea" and the City Tree "Zelkova" have been included in the work.
The Kanji (Chinese character) written on the Odako, "希風" ("Kifu") stands for "Wind of
Hope". This word "Kifu" was selected from among citizens applicants, wishing for
Sagamihara's ongoing development to become one of the government-designated
cities in Japan.

Shirasuka Shiomizaka

The motif of "Shirasuka Shiomizaka"is based on the Ukiyo-e print by Hiroshige Utagawa, a famous Ukiyo-e artist in the Edo period (A.D.1603-1867).
This piece is one of 55 works from the "The fifty-three stages of the Tokaido" (the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period, connecting Edo to Kyoto in Japan) and is of a view of an expanse of Enshu-nada Pacific coastline as seen from Shiomizaka.
This view is the best beauty spot in the Tokaido region. Furthermore, this place is said to be where Emperor Meiji first saw the pacific Ocean on his way to Edo (Tokyo) from Kyoto, in the first year of the Meiji Period (A.D.1868)
