“Lawrence of Arabia” (Horizon Pictures, 1962), starring Peter O’Toole as T.E. Lawrence, author of the 1926 book “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” on which the film is based. Original 8x10 movie still.

“Lawrence of Arabia,” a British production with American distribution (Columbia Pictures), was directed by David Lean and co-stars Alec Guinness, Jack Hawkins, Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif, Anthony Quayle, Claude Rains and Arthur Kennedy. It depicts Lawrence’s experiences in the Ottoman Empire’s provinces of Hejaz and Greater Syria during World War I, in particular his attacks on Aqaba and Damascus and his involvement in the Arab National Council.

O’Toole’s looks prompted a humorous reaction from English director and playwright Noel Coward, who quipped after seeing the premiere of the film, “If you had been any prettier, the film would have been called “Florence of Arabia.”

“Lawrence of Arabia” was nominated for ten Oscars in 1963 and won seven. The dramatic score by Maurice Jarre also won praise from critics. The film is now widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made and, in 1991, the U.S. Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry for its cultural, historical or aesthetic significance.
