English Theatre, Hamburg. The theatre was founded in 1976 by two Americans, Robert Rumpf and Clifford Dean, who trained and worked professionally in the United States before coming to Hamburg in the mid-1970s. It is housed within the Hammonia Bad building, a listed 1920s former bath house where residents of the surrounding working-class districts, whose apartments did not have bathrooms could bathe. In addition, medical treatments, gymnastics and massages were offered, and the Bad continues with medical care care today. The theatre is located on the 1st floor and has 160 seats in a single raked tier. A separate building houses a rehearsal area, administrative offices, a workshop, with costume and prop rooms.
