Founded in 1980, the Museum of Aviation at Robbins Air Force Base houses over 85 aircraft and missiles in four buildings, three of which are open to the public (the fourth is the restoration facility).
Among the strategic bombers displayed are a B-1B Lancer, B-52D Stratofortress, a B-17G Flying Fortress, and a B-29B Superfortress.
Among the fighters on site are an F-100D Super Sabre, F-15A Eagle, Cessna A-37A Dragonfly, and an F-84E Thunderjet.
Logistics aircraft include such heavy lifters as a C-141C Starlifter, C-124C Globemaster II, C-130E Hercules, and C-119C Flying Boxcar.
A UH-1F Iroquois, an MH-53M Pave Low, and an HH-43A Huskie are a few representatives of the helicopter fleet.
You can even find Snoopy piloting a 1917 Curtis JN-4 “Jenny” because, sadly, his beloved Sopwith Camel was down for maintenance!
One of the most notable late-20th century aircraft is the SR-21 Blackbird which still holds the record for the fastest airspeed ever achieved by a terrestrial airplane. This Blackbird hit 1,905.81 knots (2,193.2 mph) on July 28, 1976. To this day, the only man-made vehicles to exceed this speed are spacecraft.
