The Fort Ward Museum is an excellent public resource for learning about the American Civil War, particularly the Defenses of Washington and the Union occupation of Alexandria, Virginia. It is the best-preserved of the system of Union forts built to protect Washington, D.C., and offers exhibits, educational programs, tours, lectures, and living history activities throughout the year. The museum also houses a collection of Civil War artifacts, primarily of Union origin, providing valuable historical insights.
