a memorial to the events of the Velvet Revolution, November 17, 1989
'Pamětní deska 17. listopadu'
Otakar Příhoda and Miroslav Krátký, creators
Prague

"Eight human hands protrude from the plaque showing various gestures, the victorious "V", widely used at demonstrations in November 1989, and an outstretched empty palm, which refers to the November slogan "We have bare hands"."

"On November 17, 1989, a permitted demonstration of the Socialist Youth Union took place on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the closure of Czech universities by the Nazis. After its official end, a large number of demonstrators set out on a march to the city center to express their disagreement with the then communist regime. Police cordons gradually trapped the demonstrators on Národní třída and in the adjacent streets. Police officers from the emergency regiment of the Public Security then began to brutally beat the demonstrators. Those who wanted to escape from the scene had to pass through the passage of Kaňka's Palace on the corner of Národní třída and Mikulandská Street, where the police created a so-called threshing alley. In the following days, the passage became a spontaneous place of reverence, where people brought candles and flowers."

"On November 17, 1989, the ... intervention of the Public Security forces against students took place on the corner of Mikulandská Street, which began the so-called Velvet Revolution, which meant the definitive end of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia.

This event is commemorated by a memorial plaque on the façade of the Schirding Palace, which stands on the corner of Mikulandská and Národní streets, and commemorative events are held every year on the Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy, occasionally associated with demonstrations on current political issues."
