During their medal ceremony in the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City on October 16, 1968, two African-American athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, each raised a black-gloved fist during the playing of the US national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner".
Took my mom to the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington DC. Being with her on this trip and hearing her story as she saw depictions of history in the museum was an incredible experience for me. She remembered this event and the controversy it caused. She said once again, tensions were high. Not just in the south, but here in California as well. Our family was living in Sacramento ,California, at the time.
