1966 Leyland Atlantean PDR1

Standing beside the tram depot at Beamish Museum after a rare night away from its home base is the recently restored 1966 MCCW-bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1, UK registered KBB 118D. It has been restored to a very high standard in open top format, which it first became in 1974.

The bus was new in 1966 to Newcastle Corporation Transport (Tyneside, UK) as fleet number 118. It was one of a batch of 28 such vehicles purchased that year. It was later absorbed into Tyne & Wear Transport as fleet number 218.

Over the years of service operation it had many different liveries including, in 1977, the one commemorating the Queen's silver jubilee which it now carries in restoration.

The bus was withdrawn in about 2000 and sold to Galway Tours of Moycullen, County Galway, where it was used for sightseeing tours under the registration ZF 1510 until withdrawal in 2004. Two years later it was donated by the owner of Galway Tours to the North East Bus Preservation Trust, it's present owners, for restoration.

Making a brief visit to Beamish Museum is this immaculate 1950 AEC Regent III, formerly of Newcastle (-upon-Tyne) Corporation Transport.

The bus, UK registered NVK 341, was one of a batch of 40 ordered by the Corporation and has a 56 seat Northern Coachbuilders body. It spent it's entire working life at Newcastle Corporation and was withdrawn for preservation in 1970.

1948 Sunbeam S7 Trolleybus

Standing outside the bus depot at Beamish Museum is restored Newcastle-upon-Tyne Corporation Trolleybus No.501 (UK registered LTN 501) , the sole survivor of a batch of 30 Sunbeam S7 3-axle trolleybuses supplied to Newcastle-upon-Tyne Corporation in 1948.

The trolleybus, which is in fully working order, has been back at Beamish in deep storage for several years now, but has recently departed (August 2024), on extended loan, to the National Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft.

Vintage Public Transport Delights!

Standing over in Beamish Museum is this pair of beautifully restored vintage buses.

In the foreground is a 1934 Leyland Lion LT5A, UK registered TJ 6760 and sporting the livery of Lytham St. Annes Corporation. It had, until recently, its original 4-cylinder Leyland E61, 5.4 ltr engine. However, according to its owner the engine eventually "died" and has now been replaced by a Leyland 0.350 engine. The replacement engine was installed in such a way that, if a suitable 4-cylinder engine should become available in the future, it can be easily fitted. The bus has a 32-seat Leyland all metal body.

TJ 6760 was originally a Leyland Motors demonstrator and, at that time, carried the livery of Autocar, Kent, a subsidiary of Maidstone and District. It was sold on to Lytham St. Annes in 1935 and stayed with them until 1957.

In the background is a 1950 AEC Regent III, formerly of Newcastle (-upon-Tyne) Corporation Transport.

This bus, UK registered NVK 341, was one of a batch of 40 ordered by the Corporation and has a 56 seat Northern Coachbuilders body. It spent it's entire working life at Newcastle Corporation and was withdrawn for preservation in 1970.

1950 AEC Regent III

Making a brief visit to Beamish Museum as part of their Fares Please event of June 2024 is this immaculate 1950 AEC Regent III, formerly of Newcastle (-upon-Tyne) Corporation Transport.

The bus, UK registered NVK 341, was one of a batch of 40 ordered by the Corporation and has a 56 seat Northern Coachbuilders body. It spent it's entire working life at Newcastle Corporation and was withdrawn for preservation in 1970.

Bringing up the rear is a 1947 Bristol L5G of Durham District Services. The bus, bodied by Eastern Coachworks and UK registered HHN 202, was new to United Automobile Services in 1947 as fleet number BLO202. It was allocated to subsidiary company Bell's Services of Westerhope until it returned to the United fleet as BG216 in 1951. It was re-bodied in 1957 and two years later was transferred to United subsidiary Durham District Services as DB216.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne Public Transport Icons! by Terry Pinnegar Photography

Newcastle-upon-Tyne Public Transport Icons!

A very rare moment at Beamish Museum, when these to public transport icons from Newcastle Corporation meet.

Although it is most unlikely that they will ever have met before, there is no doubt that they will both have used the same streets of Newcastle-upon-Tyne during their respective working lives.

On the left is this immaculate 1950 AEC Regent III. The bus, registered NVK 341, was one of a batch of 40 ordered by the Corporation and has a 56 seat Northern Coachbuilders body. It spent it's entire working life at Newcastle Corporation and was withdrawn for preservation in 1970.

On the right is tram No.114, built in 1901 by Hurst Nelson & Company of Motherwell for Newcastle Corporation. It worked there until 1941 when it was transferred to Sheffield Corporation Tramways to replace vehicles destroyed by enemy air raids. The tram was removed from service there in the 1950's and was found many years later being used as a chicken shed near Scunthorpe. In 1987 it was moved to Beamish Museum and restored there to its present condition.

Unlikely Companions by Terry Pinnegar Photography

Unlikely Companions

An unlikely pairing, standing at the bus depot at Beamish Museum.

On the left is the recently restored 1966 MCCW-bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1, UK registered KBB 118D. It has been restored to a very high standard in open top format (as it was from 1974) and in the Queen's Silver Jubilee livery. The bus was new in 1966 to Newcastle Corporation Transport (Tyneside, UK) as fleet number 118. It was one of a batch of 28 such vehicles purchased that year.

On the right is Weymann-bodied Leyland Olympian LW1, UK registered 521 CTF. The bus was new in October 1957 to John Fishwick & Sons of Leyland in Lancashire as their fleet No.7. It was the first of six similar chassis-less buses purchased by the company that year.

Fishwick's garage was situated immediately adjacent to the Leyland Motors factory, so it is hardly surprising that their fleet was heavily Leyland biased.

It is very unlikely that these two buses ever met during their working lives.

The buses were at Beamish as part of the "Fares Please" event of May 2023.

Originally new to Newcastle Corporation Transport in 1966 as a conventional closed top double decker, the Atlantean passed to its successors the PTE on its formation in January 1970. During 1974 the vehicle received damage to its roof in an accident and was subsequently rebuilt as an open topper. In 1977,, 218 was painted into a special livery to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in which guise it has now been immaculately restored in.
