De Wereld van Sindbad (The World of Sindbad) is a themed area within Reizenrijk with attractions including Vogelrok, Archipel and Scirocco and the restaurant Kashba,
De Wereld van Sindbad
The World of Sindbad is located around the Reizenrijkplein in the northeast corner of Efteling. On the square itself, plants and the use of other street furniture indicate which part belongs to the Carnival Festival and which to Sindbad.
The largest attraction in the world is Vogel Rok, the entrance to which is hidden behind the immense bird figure that peers over the square. Directly opposite is Sirocco, a 'teacup' merry-go-round in which boats spin quickly when a storm arises. There is also a beach here where Sindbad is moored with his boat - a feather from Vogel Rok is among his packing.
To the left of the entrance to Sirocco is the entrance to Archipel, a water playground containing houses on stilts with thatched roofs. Opposite these two attractions is the Kasbah, a large restaurant that from the outside resembles a fortified Arab city. This is the place where Sindbad relaxes between his travels and markets his merchandise.
Efteling's relationship with the fairy tales of Fairy Tales of 1001 Nights goes back a long time. Anton Pieck's trip to Morocco and the illustrations he made for the sixteen-part Parnassus collection of stories (1943-1954) have been an important inspiration for Efteling. In May 1964, Pieck's more than seventy Moroccan travel sketches were already exhibited in what is now the World of Sindbad, namely the bodega in the Café-Restaurant.
In the late 1970s, Efteling started working on the 1001 Night Show project to build an attraction around this theme. An early sketch from October 1978 lists "Sindbad the Sailor" along with Ali Baba and Aladdin as suggestions for the theme. After a search through the park, this project resulted in 1986 in the large dark ride Fata Morgana, located on the Vonderplas, in which the visitor is completely immersed in the 1001 nights theme.
