Reverend Whitwell Elwin was born nearby in 1816. He was a distant relative of Pocahontas and a friend of Charles Darwin. In 1849 he took over Booton parish and stayed until his death in 1900.

There was a previous church on site, but having an interest in architecture, he decided to rebuild it, raising the funds himself. He also designed it, taking inspiration from churches all over England. It was erected between 1876 and 1900, out of limestone from Bath and black knapped flints from Mundesley beach. The twin towers have been described as minarets.

As parts of it became unsafe it was eventually deemed redundant and in 1987 The Churches Conservation Trust took over its care.
