Iris pseudacorus, the yellow flag, yellow iris, or water flag, is native to Europe, western Asia and northwest Africa. Its specific epithet pseudacorus means "false acorus", referring to the similarity of its leaves to those of Acorus calamus (sweet flag), as they have a prominently veined mid-rib and sword-like shape. However, the two plants are not closely related.
Iris pseudacorus has been used as a form of water treatment, since it can take up macronutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphorus) through its roots. It can also withstand high salinity levels in the water.
The plant's roots and leaves are poisonous.
Order: Asparagales
Family: Iridaceae
Genus: Iris pseudacorus
Common Name: Yellow Flag Iris
Syritta pipiens, sometimes called the Thick-legged Hoverfly, is a most common species in the insect family Syrphidae. They have a wing length ranging between 4.25–7 mm and a body length between 6.5–9 mm. They are also fast and nimble fliers, and their larvae are found in wet, rotting organic matter such as garden compost, manure, and silage. Adult Syritta pipiens are critical pollinators for a variety of flowering plants. They can also serve as a biological control agent against pests such as lettuce aphids.
