Sandy Beach (just after sunrise) - Oahu, Hawaii

Sandy Beach, also referred to as "Sandy's" and known to Hawaiians as Wāwāmalu, is a beach on the southeastern shore of Oʻahu in Hawaii. It is known for its excellent bodyboarding and bodysurfing opportunities due to its peaky shore break, consistent barrels, and a surf zone that spans approximately 2,500 feet. According to the legendary waterman, Mike Stewart, Sandy Beach is the birthplace of progressive bodyboarding. Consequently, Sandy Beach has one of the highest incidences of water related spinal cord injuries in Hawaii, earning it the infamous nickname, "break-neck beach". The water is especially dangerous during high surf, when powerful waves break over shallow sand and slabs of underwater lava rock. In certain conditions, strong rip currents are also present. The beach park is located between Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve to the west and Makapuʻu Point to the east along Kalanianaʻole Highway.

USCGC Frederick Hatch (WPC 1143) at sea - Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

This Sentinel-class cutter, also known as the Fast Response Cutter or FRC due to its program name, is part of the United States Coast Guard's Deepwater program. At 154 feet, it is similar to but larger than, the 123-foot lengthened 1980s-era Island-class patrol boats that it replaces. Its two 5,800 shp MTU diesel engines produce a top speed of 28+ knots and a range of 2,500 nautical miles or 5 days of patrol with 4 officers and 20 crew members on board. These patrols are to perform various Coast Guard missions which include but are not limited to PWCS (Ports, Waterways, and Coastal Security), Defense Operations, Maritime Law Enforcement (Drug/migrant interdiction and other Law Enforcement), Search and Rescue, Marine Safety, and environment protection.

The USCGC Frederick Hatch's namesake was a surfman and lighthouse keeper who was a two-time Gold Life Saving Medal recipient. Hatch earned his first award while serving in the Life-Saving Service and the second while serving in the Lighthouse Service. The Gold Lifesaving Medal was awarded to life-saving crew members if the rescue or attempted rescue was made at the risk of his own life with evidence of extreme and heroic daring. Frederick Hatch was awarded his first medal in 1884 for his actions as a surfman at the Cleveland Life-Saving Station for rescuing the crew of the schooner Sophia Minch. During an October gale he volunteered to attempt to reach two men caught in the aft rigging of the vessel. At great risk to his own life he reached the two men and was able to receive the line for a breeches buoy rescue to take the two men and himself safely to shore. Deciding that a surfman’s job was too dangerous, he requested a new assignment. Ironically, he was awarded his second gold medal in 1890, for his selfless act of courage as he rescued those on board the schooner Wahnapitae, which grounded near the Cleveland Breakwater lighthouse where he served as a keeper.

Surfer on a Wave by Robert Pashby - Waikīkī Beach - Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

Seemingly poised above the nearby surf of Waikīkī, "Surfer on a Wave" is located at Kuhio Beach Park in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The sculpture's base was originally surrounded by a pool. Robert Pashby's 12-foot cast bronze sculpture "Surfer on a Wave" conveys strong dynamic movement. Verdigris patina enhances the impression of frothy waves below the surfboard. It was dedicated on June 25, 2003.

Rugged Maine Coast

Amidst the whispering pines and granite's embrace,
Where the ocean's song meets the rugged face,
A seagull soars in the morning light,
Over Maine's coast, a timeless sight.

[Note: The Calm Before the Storm -- In contrast to this tranquil scene in August, 2011, Hurricane Irene (by then a tropical storm) swept up the Maine coast a few days later, causing extensive flooding, while I hunkered down in Bar Harbor.]

"Among all the marvels of modern invention, that with which I am most concerned is, of course, air transportation. Flying is perhaps the most dramatic of recent scientific attainment. Moon Has 'SEAS'; why?

Why would anyone name parts of the moon 'seas'? Because, they knew and they could see more clearly than we, the supposed 'modern' humans/masses, and they were NOT blinded by ignorance.
