Here was the year 2011 as recalled in 2017, on a concrete riverbank along the Ohio River in West Virginia.

Do you remember 2011? Look at all that manure.

The 2011 event being memorialized here is the construction of the concrete riverbank. Weird!

You are probably familiar enough with the Muskingum River to know that this does not occur most winters. But here we were at the winter of '13-'14.

The greatest cities are the ones that nearby scenic overlooks afford fine views of. Isn't Parkersburg remarkably visible from up here.

The city's floodwall is from 1950 and was federally funded via sky-high tax rates on rich people. Good!

Straw-covered mud of commercial land awaiting development on the Allegheny Plateau. by Tim Kiser

Straw-covered mud of commercial land awaiting development on the Allegheny Plateau.

This is in an unincorporated area of Wood County outside Parkersburg, West Virginia, in a development called "Emerson Commons" that has been awarded a sweetheart tax deal by the county government. For years there have been local news reports that "a Menard's is maybe supposed to be going in somewhere up in here sometime" but people do not believe it; and they do not particularly want to drive all the way out here to shop at Menard's; and they regard the project as a corrupt transfer of the county tax burden away from wealthy land developers and onto poor and middle-wage people.

Winter plants in orange-colored standing water. by Tim Kiser

Winter plants in orange-colored standing water.

Ugh I would never drink this muddy water unless I was forced to by local bullies.

According to the map in the 1970 soil survey of Wood and Wirt counties, soils here are predominantly a complex of Alfisols (Typic Hapludalfs) of the Upshur series and Inceptisols (Typic Dystrudepts) of the Muskingum series. The orange water is maybe caused by the Upshur soil I guess?
