200 Vertical Feet of Sheer Power

Nana’s Photographic Tales: 200 Vertical Feet of Sheer Power

Palouse Falls, the official Washington State Waterfall, is not only tremendous, but also dangerous. It has approximately a 200 vertical drop into one of the largest pools I have seen at the bottom of a water fall. Hikers are warned against trying to hike down or around the falls, and it is a protected geological site. The more I learn about the geological area, the more I geek out!!

We drove the miles and miles and miles of green rolling hills - our destination in the middle of nowhere, East Washington State - Palouse Falls. My goodness was it worth the drive!!

Nana’s Photographic Tales: Rolling Hills and Blue Skies

One thing about the Pacific Northwest is we literally have all the beauty spots!! Rolling hills, majestic mountains, lush forests, lakes, rivers, and ocean waters. We are going to spend some time with rolling hills for a bit - unless we get some Aurora’s here tonight!!

It is time to say goodbye to Hoover Dam and continue on our travels. I hope you’ve enjoyed this series as much as I have. The Geology Geek and Physicist in me loved learning all about this engineering marvel.

Worker Tribute

Nana’s Photographic Tales: Worker Tribute

Over 21,000 people worked on building Hoover Dam. They did have between 96-112 reported deaths. These brave workers scaled mountains, moved mountains, and built a technological mountain. Thanks is not enough of a tribute to all who keep our infrastructures working day by day.

Spillway House Event Center

Nana’s Photographic Tales: Spillway House Event Center

On the South Side of Hoover Dam are parking lots going all the way up the hill. Office buildings, display and event centres trail up the North side. While this is all part of the story, what fascinates the geologist in me is the heavy erosion on the North Side just above all the structures. Hmmmm.

Earth and Power

Nana’s Photographic Tales: Earth and Power

As I look down at the result of Hoover Dam , it’s mind boggling to know that it “generates about 4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, with a maximum capacity of 2,080 megawatts. This is enough to power a city of 750,000 people and is distributed to Nevada, Arizona, and California.” (Quoted from Wikipedia).

Backside Strength

Nana’s Photographic Tales: Backside Strength

A picture does not do the sheer magnitude of this dam justice. The sheer size and strength of this structure is stunning. It makes me want to study the engineering features and physics of what it takes to span this canyon, meld seamlessly with the rock, all to harness the power of water.

Happy 46th!

Happy 46th Anniversary to Us!

Today is our 46th Wedding Anniversary. For the last 10 or so years I’ve taken our photo on our anniversary. It’s been fun figuring out what to do that’s unique to us. Today we decided to make a throw back to a photo taken at the end of our wedding reception. I don’t usually do much backlit silhouettes, so this was fun to figure out. The silhouette practice photos of Len and Nikki were hilarious. Happy Anniversary to us and to our wedding day buddies, Brent and Cris!

Hoover Dam Spillway by Dr Kathie M Black

Hoover Dam Spillway

Nana’s Photographic Tales: Hoover Dam Spillway

Hoover Dam has two spillway tunnels built through the mountain rock for emergency release of water if levels get too high. They have only been used twice: once in 1941 for testing and again in 1983 for flooding. Each spillway carries the same amount of water as Niagara Falls. Wow.

Intake Tower Close Up

Nana’s Photographic Tales: Intake Tower Close Up

Hoover Dam has four stunning lakeside intake towers that pull water in and fill the penstocks (huge pipes) that water flows through into the dam’s power plant. They are not only functional, but stunningly beautiful.

Engineering Marvel

Nana’s Photographic Tales: Engineering Marvel

When travelling through a place you want to photograph, you don’t always have ideal light. We got to Hoover Dam around 5:30pm, by the time we parked, and I headed out with my camera, it was around 6 with the sun sinking behind canyon walls. I think morning light may be the best to photograph this location. But my oh my, what an amazing engineering structure!

Canyon Geology

Nana’s Photographic Tales: Canyon Geology

Canyons are one of the best places to study geology. The Black Canyon on the Colorado River is one of those canyons where water has eroded land to show time. Can you name geologic features you can see in this shot?
