A stranger portrait taken in Waterford City on a sunny May afternoon.

This man approached me while I was walking around Cork City with my camera over my shoulder. We got chatting, and it turns out he was a musician called Jon Bulman and a good friend of a musician from my hometown who had passed away after a fall from a ladder in 2020. They both played the bars in Albufeira, Portugal. After having a good chat, he asked if I would take his picture. This is the result.
I've been trying, over the last year or so, to work up the courage to ask strangers for portraits; and doing a pretty poor job of it. I want to, to work on my photography, to challenge myself to be more social and interactive and to give the gift of portraits. I've been doing a pretty crap job of it so far, getting a few pictures this summer from people that we were "working" with. Today while in Buffalo Exchange, the light was coming in through the window and hitting this persons face as they were checking out a guest. Not only did they have appeal, but the side lighting was great. I watched for a bit, surely looking like a creeper, and eventually asked them if I could take a quick picture of them. They said yes, that they have been asked by others, I took my snap, showed them and then scurried away. It's a first step, but not all that I wanted it to be. I had questions to ask for conversation but forgot that step; what's your name, what's your story, why face paint, and why the design? Maybe next time. Maybe with more practice. For now, just the picture and my story.
