Found washed up on a beach in Bermuda.
It resembles a jellyfish but is, in fact, a siphonophore. It is a colonial organism, being made up of smaller units called zooids.
It is a carnivore and uses its tentacles to trap and paralyse its prey. The venom in the tentacles can cause severe, painful stings for humans. Even beached specimens can sting for some considerable time after death.
Portuguese man o' war (Physalia physalis), also known as the man-of-war or bluebottle. While superficially resembling a jellyfish, it is made up of many smaller units that hang in clusters from under a large, gas-filled structure. Man o' war are carnivorous and use venomous tentacles to trap and paralyze. Seen in the watery mote surrounding Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida
