A statue of Edward Jenner, the physician, scientist and pioneer of the world's first vaccine, is located in Kensington Gardens in London. A work of the sculptor William Calder Marshall, the bronze was originally unveiled by Albert, Prince Consort in Trafalgar Square on 17 May 1858, before being moved to its present location in 1862. It is a Grade II listed building.[1][2]
The statue depicts Jenner in a seated position with one hand holding papers and is upon a plinth of Portland stone with Jenner's surname inscribed on a front panel of Aberdeen granite.[2] At the base of the plinth is the inscription 'W. Calder Marshall, R. A. Sculpt. 1858'.[3] A descriptive bronze plaque is set into the ground in front of the statue and it reads:[3]

In Jenner's time smallpox was a dreaded disease worldwide and caused many deaths particularly of children. Survivors were left badly scarred and often blinded or deformed. In 1796 Jenner vaccinated James Phipps with cowpox and showed that the boy was then immune to smallpox. He predicted the worldwide eradication of smallpox. This was finally achieved in 1980. Jenner was born, practised and died in Berkeley, Gloucestershire and studied at St. George's Hospital, London.
This statue by William Calder Marshall RA was inaugurated by Prince Albert, the Prince Consort, and was the first to be erected in Kensington Gardens in 1862. The cost was met by international subscription.

This portrait of Giovanni Chellini, a scholar and physician who treated Donatello, is one of the earliest dated Renaissance portrait busts. Rossellino has sensitively carved the elderly man's face, paying great attentino to details like wrinkles, veins and sagging skin. Donatello might have recommended the younger sculptor for this commission.*

This first major UK exhibition to explore the exceptional talents of the Renaissance master Donatello, arguably the greatest sculptor of all time, presented a fresh vision of the artist and his influence on subsequent generations.
Donatello (about 1386 – 1466) is arguably the greatest Italian Renaissance sculptor. He revolutionised sculpture both through his inventive treatment of imagery, and his mastery of an extraordinary range of materials – including marble and stone, bronze, wood, terracotta and stucco as well as unusual mixed media. He rarely repeated himself, striving for innovation and never quenching his thirst for experimentation.
Born in Florence around 1386, Donatello is one of the most inventive and influential artists of the Renaissance. Throughout a career lasting over 60 years, his extraordinary sculpture was at the heart of the revolution in art and culture taking place in 15th-century Italy.
Always at the cutting edge, Donatello combined the growing interest in ancient Greece and Rome with familiar traditions. He used a wide variety of materials and techniques, creating innovative sculptures to adorn public and private settings. Through exceptional ingenuity and emotional insight, he captured the essence of the human experience in sculptural form and paved the way for sculptors and painters alike.
This exhibition explores Donatello's creativity and unique vision, his workshop practices and collaborations, and his enduring impact on artists across the centuries.
