
'The Pioneer Club (the Original Pioneers) were formed to cast a kindly lamplight on those days. Although not demanding as much muscular effort as clearing the forest or blowing up parts of the Shield, the work that has gone into the preparation of 'The Oxen and the Axe' has been of considerable proportions.
Approached apprehensively, tackled tentatively, confidence grew until, with effort and patience resembling that of a team of oxen climbing the Eagle Hills, the thing was done. It required the better part of two years, about the time needed to produce a decent crop in 1860.' From the Preface of The Oxen and the Axe'.
