1970s Woman Standing Under Playboy Club Marquee

Vintage image of a young woman standing under a marquee for a Playboy Club. No information on the locale or if the young lady is an employee, bunny or tourist posing for a picture. Still a nice look back. This found photograph is from the private collection of an unknown and/or unknowing art collector. It’s always a thrill when it’s from Vinnie DeVille!

Playboy Club_1070

The Playboy Club at the Palms opened in October 2006, with women dressed in bunnies dealing cards. At the time, it was the first Playboy Club to open since 1988, when patriarch Hugh Hefner closed the last one in Lansing, Mich.

In 2012, The Playboy Club closed its doors at The Palms in Las Vegas. {Sharing the Knowledge}

Little did they know that the Rat Bastard Barbecue franchise and the Look So Real Taxidermy and Funeral Parlor ventures were fronts for laundering money, political donations and fencing stolen jewelry.

Hyde Park

This is a Raphael Tuck and Sons Silverette postcard printed in Holland and dates from about 1904. The Silverette range of postcards were described as having deep purple tones but although I have scanned it using 24 bit colour and a high DPI, I can’t see it although compared to a grey scale scan there is a lot more detail. The view is looking north along the east carriageway of the Ring, the road which ran around inside the boundary of Hyde Park. The buildings on the right are in Park Lane, at this time the road was quite narrow. The building middle right is No. 25 Park Lane the home of the Sassoon Banking family, it was built in 1895-96 for Barney Barnato whose real name was Barnet Isaacs, he made and lost his fortune in South Africa where he was a Gold and Diamond mining magnate. He died in 1897 after falling or jumping from a ship returning to the UK, he never lived in the building. The building was sold to Edward Sassoon and his wife, Aline Caroline Rothschild, the building was described as four storeys with a Conservatory, Winter Garden and a Ballroom. The house was inherited by their son, Sir Philip Sassoon who filled it with French and English antique 18th Century Furniture, Paintings and Tapestries. He also commissioned the artist Peter Stansky to paint an extensive mural entitled “Caravans of the East”; the mural was sold later to the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona where it is on exhibition. The building was demolished in the early 1960s and replaced by a Walter Gropius designed building which still stands although the façade has been altered recently. In 1965 the Playboy Club opened at the address which is now No. 45 Park Lane, the numbering was changed in 1934, and if you were an attractive female between the ages of 18 to 25 either single or married, you could earn 17/6 an hour or for a 40 hour week £35.00 as a Playboy Bunny and no dating the customers. It was essentially a Gaming Club and the Bunnies were Croupiers and Waitresses. Since the demise of the Playboy Clubs in the 1980s the building is now 45 Park Lane, one of the Dorchester Collection of Luxury Hotels, it is described as a “Boutique Hotel” with prices to match. The building just across Stanhope Gate (the Street) to the north is Stanhope House at 46-47 Park Lane, it was built in 1901 for the Soap manufacturer R. W. Hudson in the Gothic style and still stands although slightly further back from No. 45’s building line. Once a branch of Barclay’s Bank and other financial companies, it is now the home of International Bank Vaults who from their own publicity cater for the UHNW “Ultra High Net Worth” customers who abound in London. The two structures which can be seen in the centre of the photograph are the two Stanhope Gate Lodges, one of which was the home of the Inspector of the Hyde Park constables during the middle of the 19th Century. His name was Samuel Parkes, another case of nominative determinism, who had won the Victoria Cross during the Crimean War for his actions during the Charge of the Light Brigade. Both the Decimus Burton designed lodges were demolished in January 1960 as part of the Park Lane widening scheme which incorporated the East carriageway of the Ring as part of Park Lane. In the background between the two lodges is Dorchester House which was the home of Robert Staynor Holford M.P. who was a wealthy landowner and art collector, he used the house which was built in 1853 and described as an Italian Palazzo, to house his extensive art collection. In 1905 the building was leased by the American Ambassador Whitelaw Reid and it became the American Embassy before it was used as an officer’s hospital during WW1. The building was demolished in 1929 to make way for the Dorchester Hotel which opened in 1931.
