A few techniques were used here to bring this vibrant Mallard to life. He was sitting behind a snow mound creating a nice blend upward into his feathers. An external flash with diffuser was used to enhance the details and colors giving this beautiful portraiture photo.

This photo was taken by using an external flash allowing for proper lighting on the mallard's feathers for extreme detail.
A diffuser was used to cover the light, for a soft even look.
In this photo, I wanted to represent the beautiful vibrant emerald greens that Male Mallards have on their head.
This was captured as a RAW file using a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and Canon 100-400MM L. The photo editing process was completed using Photoshop CC2017 at 100% zoom ratio.
