In Newport News a house from circa 1898 has attracted a 2015 Mazda6 and a 2005 Lexus RX 330.

On old fire insurance maps you can see it used to be one of many houses lined up side-by-side on this block of 35th Street, but as of October 2023 it was the only house left.

Here in 2023 was a duplex in a house from 1907. The porch, red brick veneer, wooden shingles, and double sidewalks were installed in the 2010s.

Here, look at a picture of the house in June 2012. Among other differences, there used to be a door and balcony on the second floor, and the front porch only had one set of stairs. The locations of the door and window at the left side of the first floor were reversed. Seeing is believing!

According to Google Streetview, the remodeling occurred sometime between June 2012 and August 2015.

In Norfolk a "Queen Anne Revival"-style house from 1898 looks misproportioned, and I know why. by Tim Kiser

In Norfolk a "Queen Anne Revival"-style house from 1898 looks misproportioned, and I know why.

First, the side of the house was extended leftward. But the main reason it looks unusual is: There's supposed to be a tall pointy roof above the bay windows.

Here, see its hexagonally pyramidal roof as it was in August 2015.

According to Google Streetview, it was removed sometime between June 2018 and September 2022.

Downtown Madison encroaches upon a threeplex from 1891.

See the unfortunate threeplex get dwarved [sic] by the light-brown-and-dark-pink Dane County Public Safety Building (and Torture Center, probably) behind it, and the beige Dane County Courthouse to its left, built in 1993 and 2005, respectively.

Wow!

Here came a gray house from the year 1900, divided into two apartments, student rentals for UW-Madison students.

Are you going nuts for that gray Hyundai Sonata from circa 2011-2014? I am jumping up and down going nuts!

That wacky Queen Anne, of "Queen Anne Revival Architecture" fame. She designed this!

No I am just kidding, Queen Anne was not an architect.

I see where nowadays a law firm has its offices here.

See the prominent tower window with the cones above and below it: Its venetian blinds are all messed up. That is depressing!

The house is from circa 1890 but we know the spectacular staircase is from many, many years later.

At a house, a short fat round tower doesn't reach the ground and has a conical roof: This is ridiculous and good!

The tower's roofing shingles are sliding down the sides of its cone. The righthand portion of the porch has entered into a "ramshackle" condition.

I see where nowadays the house is primarily an office bldg.

Ridiculous "U.S. Queen Anne Style" house from circa 1890. by Tim Kiser

© Tim Kiser, all rights reserved.

Ridiculous "U.S. Queen Anne Style" house from circa 1890.

Is the idea supposed to be that the ridiculous porch was inspired by Queen Anne's ridiculous ballgowns? Maybe!, if "Queen Anne" is either not a queen in the monarchical sense, or is an imaginary character in an alternate history where the U.S. was a monarchy in the late 19th century. The real-life Queen Anne lived across the sea, and died in 1714, and had nothing to with any of this nonsense; and the architecture of her time looked nothing like this.

One small thing the people of the U.S. could do to have a 0.0001%-less-stupid country would be to agree to rename this style of architecture!

Personally I prefer the 1970s-looking wooden balcony enclosures to the gaudy tower and porch.

I see you admiring that Honda Civic from model years 2001-2005.

In Waterbury Conn see a lovably comical '91 in light yellow siding and truncated cone. by Tim Kiser

In Waterbury Conn see a lovably comical '91 in light yellow siding and truncated cone.

An eighteen-91, that is.

Nowadays it's an office building but I can still remember when it was a house. Oh it was teeming with residents.

Get that monstertruck out of my city, I am tired of it blocking my view.

The building is physically within the federally-designated Hillside Historic District, but the feds rejected it for inclusion in their precious district (i.e., it was labeled a "noncontributing property"), presumably because of its various weird remodelings. But the various weird remodelings are the reason why it is lovably comical!

Lansing Michigan madness/wackiness of 1885 and later. by Tim Kiser

Lansing Michigan madness/wackiness of 1885 and later.

We can be confident that the porchtop deck was not there when the house was originally built in 1885, right?

What about the tower, was it there in 1885? If it was, the windows were surely differently-situated, right? And maybe it was conical on top? Answer me!

I see where it has three mailboxes.
