The traditional tarot decks are super heteronormative, can be very white and gender binary. There’s very little representation in existing decks for a queer person to relate to. The queer tarot decks that do exist are mostly out of print or very hard to find. Starting with just the Major Arcana, this project aims to create community and tell queer stories through tarot.

Shooting portraits of queer people, inclusive of all genders, orientations, nationalities and ages in a style that reflects the individual’s association, embodiment or the bringing to life of the Tarot card they have chosen. The choice is their personal reflection of the interpretation of that Tarot card.

Each Tarot card will inspire one landscape photo, one portrait photo and a 1-2 minute video interview from that person, tell their story and explain why they relate, embody or love the card they’ve chosen – what Queer Tarot means to them.

Queering Tarot: The Strength Card

Transcription from audio interview: This is a significant card for me. I've spent since my mid 20's not wanting to be here. After a mental break earlier this year, you do realise you have a lot more strength within you than you realise. Now focused on sending positive energy out to the universe, because once you hit rock bottom, you can't go any worse than that. That helps in terms of resilience, and that kind of growth for myself this year.

The Empress – 3 – version 2
As promised, I’m shooting multiples of the Tarot cards I’m creating, the Empress is the first one to have two so far, view the other version of the card here.

It was a real pleasure to shoot this card, with a new angle, and different power and attitude. This shoot we knew which photo would be the Tarot card almost immediately, just like we did on the Tower shoot with Teddy. It gives me shivers when this happens. There was a wee kitty around the house who I thought might join the shoot as many of the other pets/ animals have in other shoots, but she decided not to – here is a silly video I made of her behind the scenes anyway – thanks Miss Molly.

This card has not been re-named as Kristina resonates with the traditional name for it. Thanks so much for sharing, participating and telling your story.

Embracing the strength in sensuality, your power. “Don’t sacrifice who you are, or who you want to be for anyone else’s comfort.” Thank you to the beautiful Roxy for shooting this with me on a whirlwind trip to Melbourne. Shot inside the Conservatory in the Fitzroy gardens minutes before they closed and kicked everyone out.

I’ve begun this project shooting myself. It feels very vulnerable presenting myself in front of the camera as well as behind it. As a Queer Witch, I love this card. My Druidic partner in crime and one of my best friends, shooting this meant so much to both of us to re-write this card.

From a strong connection to earth, Druidic practices, and the fact that often Queer people look to alternative types of Spirituality for guidance and mentors when the traditional church either does not accept or spurns them. To share this represents to me the wonderful things we can learn from the historic traditions of magick and here specifically druidic practices and create the most fertile soil for our own personal growth.

An amazing and huge thank you to Lexi, for shooting our Queer version of the Temperance card. Diving deep into the stories around balance, and creativity and that it will all be okay. Even metering our own balance for our mental health in this crazy world of social and political change. The balance we need is within us. Thank you so much Lexi for sharing your story, getting up into your amazing Drag character Sexy Galexy, showing your creative flare making all your own props for this card. I’m in love with the energy and feel of it!!
