Shortly after arriving at the August, 2021 "Victorian Iron Horse Round-Up" on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, the crew of the Rio Grande Southern 10-wheeler #20 elected to undertake a test pull with their locomotive, to see what she could do on this railroad. Normally based on the loop at the Colorado Railroad Museum, this was perhaps the first time this locomotive had pulled a full-size train on a commercial railroad in roughly 70 years. The consist for this test was the Cumbres & Toltec's own Antonito-based excursion train, which would not be running this day, because of the special event. This consist is normally handled by a larger, K-36 Class Locomotive, so it was a good test for the 20. Although she was clearly huffing and puffing just a bit, when she passed me here, just outside the Antonito Yard at Milepost 281.0, she was able to pull the train to the yard limit on this level track, without much problem. It's a pretty good bet however, that she'd struggle with this much load on some of the grades that are present on the run west to Chama, NM.
G&W SD50 #5020 still lettered for the Buffalo & Pittsburgh is now part of the Maryland Midland Railway's locomotive roster. The 5020 led the UBHF west to Highfield, MD and the interchange with CSXT on March 25, 2024. Here the crew has just set off the interchange freight on the siding along CSXT's Hanover Subdivision at Highfield is performing the required one minute brake test on the cars before cutting away.

Even though this shot was taken two months ago, it feels like it was just yesterday. CPKC 113 glides past the west signal cantilever at Howland as it heads toward the junction with the Mactier Subdivision. A friend and I had made our way out here with the understanding that these signals would soon be reduced to a pile of scrap - along with all the others from Leaside to Davenport. Despite the bitter sweetness in knowing what was coming, the meetups with others who had a similar goal was the silver lining.
On the afternoon of August 24th, 2021, Cumbres & Toltec Chief Mechanical Officer Stathi Pappas takes the opportunity to utilize Eureka & Palisade #4 "Eureka" as the Antonito Yard Goat to facilitate some equipment moves. Coupled behind her, Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Co. #1 "Glenbrook" had been in the Antonito Shops all day for a very time-consuming bearing repair on one of her tender trucks. While technically "hot", Glenbrook was not up to operating pressure and not capable of moving herself back to her assigned parking spot. As can be seen here, Eureka was more than capable of moving the this locomotive, and just a few minutes later, demonstrated she could easily pull two dead locomotives when RGS #20 was pinned on behind Glenbrook.
This image was captured during the August, 2021 "Victorian Iron Horse Round-Up" at the Cumbres & Totlec Scenic Railroad, which featured 5 operable, narrow gauges steam locomotives, all of which were built prior to 1900.
I'm going through some stuff from previous road trips looking for photos I wasn't happy with at first for various reasons and found a couple to share today. In October of 2021 I made a round trip from Minnesota to California for my friend Brian Zine's wedding and spent a couple days at the St. Maries. Brian and Samantha are expecting their first child and I haven't been west of Anaconda, MT since returning from the trip
69006 runs solo on the 6E86 Middleton Towers to Monk Bretton Redfearns glassworks on the 16/04/24, marking the first time that a class 69 is hauling this working alone.
Class 69's have been trialed on this working with a class 66 supervising, but I never managed to photograph these.

Privately owned Alco RS-3 New York Central 8223 on the east end of the Finger Lakes Railway 50th Anniversary Excursion train in 2008. This train ran between Geneva and Solvay NY. Here it is at Martisco Station Museum. This train ran fifty years after the last scheduled passenger train ran on this line when it was part of the New York Central. This unit is currently on the Adirondack Railroad.
