GWR loco No. 7917 'North Aston Hall' @ Old Oak Common shed - Apr 1959

An old photograph of Great Western Railway (GWR) steam locomotive No. 7917 'North Aston Hall' at Old Oak Common shed/MPD, taken by H. Fisher in Apr 1959.

This is in a transport enthusiast (H. Fisher) old photo album, next to the photo is written "A 'Modified Hall' No 7917 North Aston Hall, at Old Oak Common Shed. 26/4/59".

No. 7917 was a F. Hawksworth designed 'Modified Hall class' 4-6-0 engine, built at the Swindon Works and new to GWR in Apr 1950. The locomotive was withdrawn from service in Aug 1965 then scrapped in the October at Bird (Llanelli).

Belfast & Co. Down Rly loco No. 240 @ Queens Quay shed - Jun 1952 by Frederick McLean

Belfast & Co. Down Rly loco No. 240 @ Queens Quay shed - Jun 1952

Unfortunately I have no information on railways in Northern Ireland!

An old photograph of a Belfast & County Down Railway (BCDR) locomotive. The photo is stuck in a sheet of paper with "240 Class 6" above it, and "No 6 preserved in Queens Quay Store Shed 24/6/52" below. There is no photographer name.

I assume that "No 6" is incorrect and that it is 'class 6' engine No. 240 which never actually went into preservation.

If anyone has full loco details please message me and I will add them.

If there are any errors in the above description please let me know. Thanks.

Manchester Ship Canal engine shed & locos @ Ellesmere Port Docks - Jul 1961

An old photograph taken in Jul 1961 on a 'shed bash/rail tour' taking in Ellesmere Port Docks. This is of assorted tank steam engines at the MSC engine/locomotive shed.

The photo is in a rail enthusiast old album (owner's name is not known), the photo reverse is annotated with "Ellesmere Port M.S.C. shed. locos 72, 73, 89. 9 Jul 1961".

The MSC Railway received and despatched goods trains to/from all the UK’s main line railway systems, using connecting junctions at three points in the terminal docks. Its steam locomotives were designed to negotiate the tight-radius curves of the docks rail tracks; the middle wheels of the 0-6-0 arrangement were flangeless, and the coupling rods had a hinged central section allowing several inches of lateral play. Steam traction finished here just a couple of years after this photo was taken, being replaced by five six-coupled ‘Sentinel’ diesel-hydraulic locos. The last operational section of the MSC Railway, at Trafford Park, was closed on 30 April 2009.

Loco @ Perrin's engine shed, Birkenhead Docks - May 1962 - hand coloured version by Frederick McLean

Loco @ Perrin's engine shed, Birkenhead Docks - May 1962 - hand coloured version

My hand *coloured (if you want to use it please credit me and link to this description) version, of an old, poor quality (particularly on the right) photograph taken in May 1962 on a 'shed bash/rail tour' taking in Birkenhead Docks. This is of an unknown 0-4-0 saddle tank steam shunter at Perrin's engine/locomotive shed. Joseph Perrin & Sons Ltd. started in 1891 and were one of a number of small docks shunting firms, apparently the Perrin shed was "close to the Egerton Bridge", and about to fall down by the look of it.

This is in a rail enthusiast old photo album (owner's name is not known), the photo reverse is annotated with "Perrin at Perrins shed Birkenhead Docks, 6 May 1962".

The original BnW photo is here:-
flic.kr/p/2px6mWP

💻 I did get suggestions on Facebook regarding the engine, a couple of them were:-
🚂 Andrew Wylie - “Perrin” was a Barclay but that looks far more like a small Hudswell Clarke which would make it HC 1081/14, named at one time “Liverpool”. At this time Perrins had 3 steamers (2 x AB and 1 x HC) and they went for scrap in January 1964 after being replaced by a second hand Fowler diesel. (Source - IRS Handbook G)
and
🚂 Adam Roper - Lesser Railways of the Yorkshire Dales by Harold Bowtell lists Perrin as Andrew Barclay 820 of 1898, originally Gameshope at Talla Reservoir, Ballachulish, Angram Reservoir etc. But this loco doesn’t look like a Barclay…

* My hand (not machine AI) coloured images are more sketch or watercolour like than colour transparency or print like. They are an impression of that subject and period, rather than an accurate representation of how the image/subject actually looked when the photo was taken.
