Class 43 locomotive No. 43207 brings up the rear of 1E63, the 15:27 Plymouth to Leeds service at Wemberham Lane, Yatton on Monday 27th March 2023. For the record sister locomotive No. 43303 was at the front.

Class 43 locomotive No. 43207 approaches the Westmead Rhyne foot crossing with 1S51, the 12:27 Plymouth to Leeds service on Thursday 19th May 2022. Sister locomotive No. 43239 was at the rear. This train's normal destination would be Edinburgh, but on that particular day "a problem with engineering equipment" meant that it went no further than Leeds.

From this viewpoint it's just possible to make out Yatton station in the distance, below the road bridge.

A rhyne is a is a drainage ditch, or canal, used to turn areas of wetland at around sea level into useful pasture.

Even the locals disagree on how to say rhyne - is rine or reen?

Class 43 locomotive No. 43366 speeds east at Westmead Rhyne with 1S55, the 14:27 Plymouth to Leeds service on Sunday 29th August 2021. Sister locomotive No. 43207 was at the rear.

I've been to this place dozens of times before to photograph trains, over many years. Yet I keep coming back. Maybe it is the lure of the simple pleasures offered by the English countryside on a late summer's afternoon such as this one that explains it. Little things like greeting walkers on the footpath, watching birds that I cannot name wheeling high overhead, or tasting the sweet sense of freedom that getting away from it all for half an hour or so can bring. And yes, the fact that this idyllic spot is next to the railway is a bonus for anyone that way inclined.

Simple Pleasures is a track from A Nod and a Wink, the 2002 album by Camel. A snippet of the song's lyrics, written by Andrew Latimer and Susan Hoover, is reproduced above.

Summer is well into its stride as Class 43 locomotive No. 43378 approaches Westmead Rhyne in Yatton with 1E63, the 15:20 Plymouth to Leeds service on Friday 16th July 2021. For the record sister locomotive No. 43366 was at the rear.

Shot using an optical polarizing filter followed by some extra filter tinkering in Lightroom and Picasa.

A possible candidate for focus stacking, perhaps. But on this occasion - as usual - I left it too late to set up a tripod.

Out in the local countryside last night. Lovely light from the setting sun creating a warm glow on this tree and reflections of the clouds off the water.
