Cibatu Java Indonesia 23rd June 1981

I posted a similar shot of Cibatu PNKA shed staff posing on the running plate of Mallet 2-6-6-0 CC5001 some years ago. I believe this chap was the shed master.

Built in 1928 by Werkspoor near Amsterdam this locomotive has been preserved at Taman Mini in Jakarta.

Other Mallets dumped and in service were also on shed. I was invited to sign the visitor's book by the shed foreman. The last person to sign it before me was an English railway enthusiast who had visited in August 1979. One of these impressive Dutch built locomotives is also preserved in the Dutch National Railway Museum in Utrecht.

We were staying in the Mobil guesthouse in Puncak & rented a car & driver to reach Cibatu - a long ride on busy small roads.

Didcot Shed in 1962

GW Hall 6907 Davenham Hall is stabled at the front of Didcot Shed (81E) on Saturday 30 June 1962. In the background can be seen the coaling stage and 16T mineral wagons used to take the coal up the ramp for loading into the tenders and bunkers of the locos. Didcot is now the home of the GWS and the building still exists, an important reminder of the arduous physical efforts needed to service and prepare steam locos. 6907 was allocated to Oxley (84B) at the time, but be withdrawn from Banbury (2D) in February 1965 and scrapped at Cashmores Great Bridge.

Castle on Mail Train at Newton Abbott

On 13 June 1951 5098 Clifford Castle is at Newton Abbott on Train 665 12.00 Penzance to Crewe which it will work as far as Bristol. The train continued to run as late as 1965, although leaving Penzance an hour later and coded 1M99. Considered an important service it was an early turn to be dieselised from the Southwest, often with one of the five D600 class. During the early months of 1963 and the big freeze the train was often double-headed by steam and a Warship as far as Bristol. The only time I saw two steam on the train was 17 January 1963 when 5029 Nunney castle and 7820 Dinmore Manor brought the train into Temple Meads. Both locos subsequently went to Barry and preservation. 5098 was based in the Southwest during the 1950's, its final shed in the area being Newton Abbott (83A) from January 1962 until August 1962. The loco's final move was to Reading (81D) in April 1964 to be withdrawn two months later and cut up at Cohens Morriston. It also had the distinction of hauling the last down Lodging Turn 1V93 9.05 Liverpool to Penzance from Shrewsbury to Newton Abbott on Saturday 3 March 1962 before dieselisation the following Monday.

Great Central Railway Loughborough Leicestershire 24th April 2024

The Wednesday lineside clearance gang continued clearing and burning the up side cutting between Loughborough station and Beeches Road.

Meanwhile the GCR was testing the participants of next weekend's Diesel Gala so we were treated to an interesting cavalcade of BR diesels.

66651

The new order, a relatively ex works DB Cargo 66651 eases around the curve at Plumley with 6H02 Arpley Sidings - Tunstead empty Brunner Mond hoppers.

66651 (ex 66221) has recently been out-shopped from Toton after being re-geared to handle heavier trains in response to DB withdrawing their remaining class 60's. This working has been in the hands of tugs since as long as I can remember, certainly since I've been out and about photting for over a decade now and it's a real shame to see them gone from DB's rosta.

After getting half done for 6E09 about ten minutes earlier, it was touch and go and the peg lifted with a chunk of heavy cloud drifting towards the sun. As the train appeared I still feared the worse but thankfully the light held out. By the time the end of the train had passed the signal the light had gone... Finally some luck!
