Approaching the shrine grounds from the street, first passing under the larger torii (left of this photo), the large worship building stands in the open with its back to Mt. Hino, rising almost directly from the shrine grounds. This building faces west, while conventionally the majority of shrines on public and private property will be seen facing the south, where the sun's annual cycle rises and falls higher and higher from the horizon before subsiding until the winter solstice arrives. Whether the west-facing decision is a practical matter of the mountain's shape, or is for other reasons would be interesting to know. The side-shrine in the above photo does face south, perhaps in compensation for the main hall backing up to the mountain and facing the west.
