Gljúfrafoss

Gljúfrafoss is a small waterfall north of the larger falls of Seljalandsfoss in Iceland. The falls are partially obscured by the cliff rock, but hikers can follow a trail to enter the narrow canyon where the water plummets to a small pool. Unfortunately, on the day of the visit, conditions were too poor to allow this.

Before the snow starts to fall

When we visit the falls, we usually turn our gaze to the cliffs; the tranquil landscape of the plain is hardly attractive. But this time, the light seemed extraordinary.

Waterfall

Located on the western edge of the Eyjafjöll volcano, the Seljalandsfoss waterfall comes from the Seljalandsá river, which is formed by the melting ice of the Eyjafjallajökull. Once it reaches the edge of the plateau, the water falls into the void over a chasm for around 65 metres.

Approaching Seljalandsfoss

On the road towards the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. In the distance, you can see several waterfalls that follow one another along the cliff face. Seljalandsfoss is the one the right and the largest one.

Changing weather

It doesn't take long and it doesn't take many kilometers for the weather in Iceland to change completely. From blue skies and a sunny landscape, we move on to gray skies and low clouds that barely let us see where the sun is.
