Trio of SD40-2's with a short train of only nine cars. They just came from the CSX yard and the train is now headed west back to the SWP rails in Broadford.

A mixed freight train slows to a stop in Wheeler Bottom, Dunbar Tonwship to wait for permission to go across the Greene Junction Bridge and get onto CSX rails. The stack of heavy duty crossties on the right are going to be used to refurbish that bridge. This view is seen from the Great Allegheny Passage (former right of way of the Western Maryland Railway). The Flickr map is not correct again, as this is not in South Connellsville.
The old coal loadout for the Bullskin Tipple Company has been completely idle since 2019. And it had only been used sporadically in the past decade. The tracks in the photo are part of the SWP Railroad's Bullskin Branch. It is also no longer used since the only customer on the line was the coal loadout. In railroad history, this was the Southwest Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, and Conrail. Note that some old open hoppers were used for the structure of the coal loadout.
Cow tunnels were created underneath railroads and roads to give cattle easy access to water sources that otherwise would be cut off. Many years ago there was a pasture on the other side of this tunnel, but it is now grown up. The railroad above it was built as the PRR Southwest Branch. Later it became Penn Central and Conrail. Now it is owned by the Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad and on the verge of abandonment. Directly behind me in the photo was Mounts Creek. You can see footprints in the snow, from some animal making use of the tunnel.
