Young White-tailed Buck in the Field

I photographed this young White-tailed Buck early in the morning at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma.

The buck had just emerged from the tall grass and stood still, watching me quietly as the soft morning light lit up the field. His antlers are just beginning to grow in velvet, a sure sign of spring. I always enjoy seeing deer during this time of year as they transition out of their winter coats. This moment was one of those calm encounters that make early mornings on the refuge so rewarding.

White-tailed Buck in Spring Coat

A young White-tailed Buck grazes quietly in a lush field at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma.

This image was taken in spring, when deer begin shedding their thick winter coats and new velvet-covered antlers start to emerge. The soft light and green grasses set a peaceful tone as this buck forages undisturbed, early in the morning when wildlife are most active. White-tailed Deer are a common but always captivating sight at the refuge, offering photographers excellent chances to observe seasonal changes and natural behavior up close.

I live on a rare Heath with the most beautiful Heath now in full bloom.

I used my manual Nikon DF and the Lensbaby Twist. Sometimes you can't beat a manual camera and an awesome lens.

Shetland pony mare and foal by tmeallen

Shetland pony mare and foal

A Shetland pony mare walks with her foal through a spring meadow. You can see a pair of chestnuts above her knees on her front legs. Chestnuts are keratinized epithelial structures, much like human fingernails and are the vestigial remnants of a time when ancestors of modern horses had toes. They can be painless removed, if desired.

"We like sheep"

An unshorn Shetland sheep and her spring lamb walking in a meadow by Sumburgh Lighthouse, Shetland, with blooming sea pinks. In Handel's Messiah, Part 2, no. 26 is the chorus "We like sheep", meaning "We (are) like sheep", but I always hear it as "We like (are fond of) sheep". Hope I didn't trigger an ear worm 😀. AI was used sparingly to simplify the composition.

Shetland pony in a spring meadow

One of the joys of my recent trip to the Shetland Islands was a chance to see the hardy little Shetland ponies, which date back to the Bronze Age (2000 BCE), in their traditional environment. The Shetlands are geographically close to Norway and genes from long ago imports of ponies by early Norse settlers contribute to the current breed. Similar to our own native Newfoundland ponies (an endangered species) they were originally used for hauling and ploughing.

Wild anemones

The wood anemone (Anemonoides nemorosa), known by the name of "Silvia", belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, is a small (no taller than 30 cm) herbaceous perennial plant.
It is among the first spring (or late winter) blooms of our meadows.

No Mow May by barrowfordian (Martin)

No Mow May

"No Mow May" is an annual campaign by a number of gardening and conservation groups in the UK. The idea behind the campaign is that by leaving lawns unmown nature itself benefits in several ways - the more wildflowers and grasses the better chance there is for insects and larvae to grow and develop. The more this happens the more secure becomes the food chain for birds and other wild animals. One other benefit is that fewer petrol mowers will be used - benefitting local air quality.

Although encouraged by a growing number of organisations, "No Mow May" is still far from being accepted by everyone!

The photo above was taken in a neighbouring field.
