On an overcast summer day in Leicester, England, a contemporary steel sculpture depicting King Richard III on horseback stands in the Cathedral Gardens. The artwork, surrounded by blooming flowers and on ground damp from recent rain, is marked with the date 22.08.1485, commemorating the Battle of Bosworth Field where the historical king died. His remains were famously rediscovered in Leicester and reinterred in the nearby Leicester Cathedral.

Sculptures to explore and enjoy in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.

The two metal sculptures in the image are well-known pieces in the garden:

The white tree-like sculpture on the left is called “Graft” by Roxy Paine. This stainless steel sculpture, created between 2008-2009, represents two fictive but distinct species of trees joined at the trunk, symbolizing the tension between order and chaos.

The red abstract sculpture on the right is “Cheval Rouge (Red Horse)” by Alexander Calder. This piece, created in 1974, is a striking example of Calder’s work with large-scale, abstract forms that often evoke animals or other natural shapes. And of course it's in his favorite color, RED.
