Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham. Unlike many theatres, the rebuild in 1935 avoided the oppressive overhang of the balconies by stepping them high and well back, giving excellent sightlines throughout. Opened in 1902 as the Lyceum, designed by Owen & Ward, the theatre was completely rebuilt internally in 1935 to the design of Roland Satchwell and Ernst Schafelberg. It seats around 1,350 on three levels. In 1967 a new box office and connecting bridge to the theatre were constructed, and the whole theatre was refurbished by the Seymour Harris Partnership in 1990.
