Daniel Maher (1834 - 1927), after whom Maher Street in Tolland is named, came to Wagga in 1865 and lived in a weatherboard cottage near the end of Little Gurwood (later Sturt) Street, until it was washed away by flood. In 1965, the apartment complex "Kilnacrott" (a Gaelic word meaning "church on a hill") was built on the same spot.

This is the third Town Hall in Ballarat constructed in 1870 and designed by Architects JJ Lorenz and HR Casselli (interiors) following a design competition. It is a very important building in the Sturt Street streetscape and a local landmark. It is unusual for its peel of bells which are not a usual feature of Town Halls.
It has a symmetrical facade, decorated with a trabeated system of pilasters and is dominated by the dome roofed clock tower.
