It’s Christmas Time in the City

Various lines from the popular 1950 contemporary Christmas song “Silver Bells” seems to ring true for most cities around the world in the lead up to Christmas, Melbourne included. I love Christmas, and Christmas time in town, with all the wonderful and varied Christmas decorations has always been part of the magic of Christmas for me ever since I was a child in England. I love the festive colours, the glitter, the shine and sparkle of Christmas decorations. I have been photographing different Christmas trees and decorations around Melbourne’s central business district over a number of years, and this collage showcases just some of them.

This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a monthly challenge called “Freestyle On The Fifth”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each month, and the image is to be posted on the 5th of the month.

This month the theme, “Christmas Magic” was chosen me.

Photos in this Christmas collage include decorations from the Melbourne Town Hall, David Jones department store, the RACV Club, the Royal Arcade and the Melbourne Central Tower.

Victorian Mail in a Twenty First Century World

Standing near the rail bridge on Carlisle Street in Balaclava, this old red pillar box mailbox topped with a gold crown is a throw back to the Victorian age, when under Queen Victoria, the postal system in Britain and all its colonies was reformed by the introduction of the Uniform Penny Post. Yet here it stands in the Twenty First Century world, surrounded by modern trams, trains and some buildings, still used to post the dwindling letters that are sent these days, and identified as a local landmark in Balaclava. It stands as a testament to its own survival.

This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a monthly challenge called “Freestyle On The Fifth”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each month, and the image is to be posted on the 5th of the month.

This month the theme, “mailbox” was chosen by Gary (Gazman_AU).

With my love of history and Victoriana, I wanted to include a red pillar box example. This one on Balaclava’s busy Carlisle Street seemed to be the perfect choice. Just as I was taking the photo, the sound of a tram made alerted me of its coming approach, and just as I took the shot, a train raced over the Carlisle Street railway bridge! It was destined to be!

A Neighbourhood with Character by raaen99

A Neighbourhood with Character

One of the great things about my neighbourhood is the fact that it is an old suburb, which means that it has built its character up over a period of over one hundred years. There are lots of elements from the past, architectural fashions and statements, and just fun things if you know where to look, have a sharp eye and your camera ever at the ready. As I was discussing with a friend the other day, “shoot it or lose it”. So often we think, “I must go back and photograph that”, and by the time we do, it’s gone! Luckily here are some of the character that exists in my neighbourhood that I have managed to capture with my camera.

This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a monthly challenge called “Freestyle On The Fifth”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each month, and the image is to be posted on the 5th of the month.

This month the theme, “my neighbourhood” was chosen by Beverley (BlueberryAsh).

This collage features shots of:

Art Nouveau advertising tiles from an Edwardian motor car garage.

A hand painted 1950s advertisement for Tarax Orange on a former milk bar’s upper windows.

A domestic stained glass windows featuring a kangaroo and a kookaburra from a house built around 1900.

An Art Deco pull plate from my local Catholic church.

A hand painted Victorian sign on a former local butcher’s shop.

A hand painted advertisement for Lux Soap Flakes taken from the original advertisement by one of my favourite poster artists John Hassall, which appears on the side of a café.

House numbers from 1930s and 1940s villas.

A stained glass bell and electricity bolt above the door of a shop, which I believe was once an advertisement for a public telephone.

A 1950s hand painted advertisement for a men’s, women’s and children’s clothing shop.

Two of the beautiful cats who rule the roost (and snooze in the window) of my local second hand bookshop.

Showily ornate crosswalk to weird destination.

If I ever decide to cross this street I am gonna alternately wave at, blow kisses to, and applaud for stopped motorists, my entire way across.

Tibouchina with bins, urban streetscape by Su_G

Tibouchina with bins, urban streetscape

Tibouchina with bins, urban - or suburban - streetscape (Gordon Railway Station, Sydney, Australia).

This is a classic lesson for designers - or whoever it was that decided to plant this glorious flowering tibouchina - in paying attention to the foreground, which in this case happened to be two dark green bins. Nothing wrong with that, and as a user of trains I am always happy to see a bin, but what is it with the lean? Or am I being too neat?
