Sydney Red Gum (Angophora costata syn. Eucalyptus apocynifolia) by Poytr

Sydney Red Gum (Angophora costata syn. Eucalyptus apocynifolia)

Measured at 42 metres tall. Two Creeks track, Lindfield in Sydney.

One of the tallest Sydney Red Gums I've measured. The habitat is a Coachwood rainforest in a sandstone gully.

Some of the Coachwood are 28 metres tall. A curious observation is the paucity of ferns in this gully.

Recent scientific study has suggested this plant be placed back in the genus Eucalyptus. It makes sense to me. However, I don't believe that the authorities are willing to accept this name change just yet.

Red gums rising

Known commonly as Sydney red gum, smooth-barked apple and also rusty gum, these beautiful trees have a primarily coastal occurrence here in New South Wales.

Typically found on sandstone and sandy areas in dry sclerophyll woodlands and forests. The bark is smooth and red-salmon to brown-grey-purple. They have an annual shedding process where large amounts of thin plates are shed. Older trees typically have dimples on the trunk, as seen here, contorted branches and large bowl-like swellings (hence the reference to 'apple' in one of the common names).

Angophora is one of three similar genera that are commonly referred to as 'eucalypts', the others being Corymbia and Eucalyptus.

Growing to 30 m/98 feet in height.

Angophora costata, on the Forest Track, near Stanwell Park, New South Wales, Australia. The new leaves of these Sydney red gums are orange, and their new bark (visible as last year's bark is shed) is also orange to pink, giving them quite a distinctive look.
