...und ein letztes Bild aus dem Land der Störche, 2 Tage und ein paar Stunden in Masuren gehen zu Ende. Bei heftigem, stundenlangem Dauerregen führt mich mein Weg über holprige Landstraßen und bestens ausgebaute Autobahnen in Polens Hauptstadt, Warschau.

...and one last picture from the land of storks. Two days and a few hours in Masuria are coming to an end. In heavy, hours-long, continuous rain, my route takes me over bumpy country roads and well-maintained highways to Poland's capital, Warsaw.

Neckarsteinach, die kleine Stadt in der ich lebe, befindet sich im Geo-Naturpark Bergstraße-Odenwald. Eine Stunde mit dem Auto entfernt, wir befinden uns immer noch im selben Geo-Naturpark, liegt das Naturschutzgebiet Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue, mit einer Fläche von 24 qkm das größte Naturschutzgebiet in Hessen. Da wollte ich schon immer mal hin. Also, um 4.30 Uhr aufstehen und mit vollbepacktem Rucksack auf Fotosafari, die Erwartungen sind groß! Ich laufe und laufe, 1 km, 2km, 5 km, 8 km, nichts als Mücken und dichter Wald, es gibt nichts zu fotografieren hier, während ich mich fortwährend frage, was ich hier eigentlich tue, laufe ich weiter und weiter. Endlich, eine Art hölzerner Aussichtspodest unterbricht die Monotonie und ermöglicht endlich einen etwas weiteren Blick auf eine sumpfartige Wasserfläche. Kaum sitze ich, kommt ein Eisvogel daher. Dies ist erst das zweite Mal in meinem Leben, dass überhaupt einen sehe. Die Kamera und das 300er Tele sind bereit. Hab ich Dich !

Neckarsteinach, the small town where I live, is located in the Bergstrasse-Odenwald Geo-Nature Park. An hour away by car, we're still in the same Geo-Nature Park, and it's the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue Nature Reserve. With an area of 24 square kilometers, it's the largest nature reserve in Hesse. I've always wanted to go there. So, I get up at 4:30 a.m., my backpack packed, and I set off on a photo safari. My expectations are high! I walk and walk, 1 km, 2 km, 5 km, 8 km, nothing but mosquitoes and dense forest. There's nothing to photograph here. While I keep asking myself what I'm actually doing here, I walk on and on. Finally, a kind of wooden viewing platform breaks the monotony and finally allows a slightly wider view of a marshy expanse of water. I've barely sat down when a kingfisher comes along. This is only the second time in my life that I have ever seen a. The camera and the 300mm telephoto lens are ready. Got you!

Wir befinden uns am ehemaligen Hauptsitz des Oberkommandos des Heeres OKH Mauerwald im einstigen Ostpreußen, heute Masuren (Polen). Der größte noch vollständig erhaltene Bunker ist ein massiver Block aus Beton mit ein paar Bunkerräumen darin. Seine Maße betragen 15 x 15 x 8 m. Heute herrscht hier Stille. Dir Bunker sind von dickem Moos bedeckt, von lichtem Mischwald umgeben, ab und zu blühen Glockenblumen....

We are at the former headquarters of the Army High Command (OKH) Mauerwald in what was once East Prussia, now Masuria (Poland). The largest, still completely preserved bunker is a massive concrete block with a few bunker rooms inside. Its dimensions are 15 x 15 x 8 meters. Today, silence reigns here. The bunkers are covered in thick moss, surrounded by sparse mixed forest, with bluebells blooming occasionally...

Wälder und Wiesen dazwischen ein paar einzelne Gehöfte prägen das Landschaftsbild Masurens. Ackerbau oder gar größere Städte sind in dieser Region selten. Die Menschen, einst nach dem 2. Weltkrieg von viel östlicheren für Polen verlorenen Gebieten hierher zwangsumgesiedelt, sind gegenüber Fremden verschlossen, zurückhaltend, Mücken, Schwalben und Störche sind zahlreich. Selbst Elche soll es hier geben, aber gesehen habe ich keine.

Forests and meadows, interspersed with a few isolated farmsteads, characterize the landscape of Masuria. Agriculture or even larger cities are rare in this region. The people, forcibly resettled here after World War II from territories much further east that were lost to Poland, are reserved toward strangers. Mosquitoes, swallows, and storks are plentiful. There are even supposed to be elk here, but I didn't see any.

Nach der ein klein wenig abenteuerlichen Anreise bin ich nun im Land der Störche angekommen. Nein, ich bin nicht wegen der Störche hierher gereist, aber mit über 50.000 brütenden Paare sind die Weißstörche hier zumindest im ländlichen Raum allgegenwärtig. Sie brüten hoch droben auf Strommasten, auf Hausdächern und Kaminen.
So, wo mag ich wohl sein ??

After a somewhat adventurous journey, I've now arrived in the land of storks. No, I didn't travel here for the storks, but with over 50,000 breeding pairs, white storks are omnipresent here, at least in rural areas. They nest high up on power lines, on rooftops, and on chimneys.
So, where could I be?

Diesen Murmeltier - Ringkampf durfte ich beim Abstieg von der Fuorcla Gravaselvas zum Julierpass aus ca. 40 m Entfernung beobachten. Ich hatte zwar ein 300er Tele im Rucksack, jedoch wagte ich den Objektivwechsel nicht, sondern genoss die Szene und machte ein paar Bilder mit den 120 mm meines Standard-Zooms. Dieses Bild stellt eine ca. 30-fache Vergrößerung des Originalbildes dar, welches ich dann mittels der KI von TOPAZ Photo AI vergrößert habe.

I was lucky enough to observe this marmot wrestling match from about 40 meters away while descending from the Fuorcla Gravaselvas to the Julier Pass. Although I had a 300mm telephoto lens in my backpack, I didn't dare change lenses. Instead, I enjoyed the scene and took a few pictures with my standard 120mm zoom. This image is approximately 30x magnified from the original image, which I then enhanced using TOPAZ Photo AI.

Pizzo delle Tre Mogge 3.441 m
Erstaunlich wie schnell es bitterkalt wird, oben auf dem Berg, sobald die Sonne weg ist. Und so freue ich mich nach einer eisigen, spätabendlichen Fotosession auf mein Nachlager. Doch halt, was ist das ?! Plötzlich beginnen im Südosten ein paar Wolken zu leuchten. Der Mond vielleicht, aber der sollte eigentlich deutlich weiter im Osten aufgehen, noch hinter dem rieseigen Pis Lagrev. Vielleicht die Scheinwerfer von Pistenraupen in einem Sommerskigebiet ? Oder Flakscheinwerfer des Italienischen oder Schweizerischen Militärs ? Sehr merkwürdig das Ganze. Ich warte einfach mal ab und, es ist tatsächlich der Mond. Zwar verstehe ich nicht ganz, dass er so weit in Richtung Süden aufgeht, aber egal. Ein großartiger Abschluss dieses wunderbaren Tages.

It's amazing how quickly it gets bitterly cold up on the mountain once the sun has set. And so, after an icy, late-evening photo session, I'm looking forward to my overnight camp. But wait, what's that?! Suddenly a few clouds start to glow in the southeast. Maybe the moon, but it should actually be rising much further east, still behind the gigantic Pis Lagrev. Perhaps the headlights of snow groomers in a summer ski resort? Or anti-aircraft searchlights from the Italian or Swiss military? The whole thing is very strange. I just wait and see, and it really is the moon. I don't quite understand why it rises so far south, but whatever. A fantastic end to this wonderful day.

Question: How does the fish get into the mountain lake???

In fast allen Bergseen gibt es Fische. Aber, wie kommen die wohl dahin ?? Meist befinden sich mehr oder weniger große Wasserfälle unterhalb. Hochschwimmen ? Keine Chance ! Eine Theorie besagt, dass Wasservögel Fischeier, die eine ganze Weile auch außerhalb des Wassers überleben können, an ihren Beinen klebend hier herauf transportieren. Aber, ich habe hier oben am Berg noch keinen Vogel größer als einen Spatz gesehen. Meine Theorie: Die Bergwelt wurde Anno dazumal von den Einheimischen wesentlich intensiver bewirtschaftet als heute. Ackerbau beispielsweise wurde (meist vergeblich) oftmals bis auf über 2.000 Meereshöhe probiert. Warum also sollen nicht Senner und Schafhirten die Fische hier oben ausgesetzt haben, in der Hoffnung auf eine kulinarische Abwechslung und einen gewissen Zeitvertreib beim eintönigen Schafe hüten.

There are fish in almost all mountain lakes. But how do they get there? There are usually more or less large waterfalls below. Swimming up? No way! One theory is that waterfowl carry fish eggs, which can survive out of water for quite some time, up here by sticking them to their legs. But I have never seen a bird bigger than a sparrow up here on the mountain. My theory: In the old days, the mountains were cultivated much more intensively by the locals than they are today. Agriculture, for example, was often tried (usually in vain) up to over 2,000 meters above sea level. So why shouldn't dairymen and shepherds have released the fish up here in the hope of a culinary change and a certain pastime from the monotonous task of herding sheep.

Seit 10 Monaten hab ich nun schon keinen Berg mehr gesehen, der höher als 1000 m ist. Eine Schande 😥. Zeit wird's....
