This is NOT Graffiti!

"The Lady With an Ermine" graces the 2005 StreetScapes T-Shirt. The students of the Art Academy of Cincinnati created this stunning reproduction at last year's festival. The lead artist was Jahaziel (Haz) Minor.

The day after the 2005 festival, the City of Cincinnati dispatched a wage-earner to power-wash away all of the masterpieces that had just been completed.

This action is largely believed to have been retaliatory in nature, as many of the shop owners and residents in the Ludlow Avenue area had repeatedly complained to city officials about graffiti in the neighborhood and the city's lack of interest in doing anything constructive about it.

Though Lisa Storie, the owner of Sitwell's, ran out to try to stop the wage-earner from power-washing away the works of art, he insisted on removing the "graffiti" the artists had installed over the weekend.

Other shop owners and residents tried to stop him, as well, but he had orders from his superiors and had no time to listen to their nonsense. So the beautiful works of art created by dozens of talented artists were power-washed away before their eyes.

Isn't it something that while the "graffiti artists" were "vandalizing" city streets in the public eye, city officials who had themselves observed the criminal acts from the frontline did not attempt to intervene or have the offenders arrested? It was only after all of the hard work -- and after the thousands of festival supporters were back at work and school -- that the City declared the masterpieces graffiti.

Councilman Jim Tarbell caught wind of this. And the rest, as they say, is history.
