Recently I had an opportunity and privilege to help the The Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Heritage Society with some photography they wanted done. It was a great opportunity to see the inside and outside of this beautifully maintained elevator. The Society and its members along with volunteers are doing awesome work to keep the elevator alive. Check them out and take a tour... Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Heritage Society Grain Elevator
Mother Nature wasn't very kind to this old Pioneer. First, a strong wind put some lean on it's annex, and then it was struck by lightning on Friday, 02 June 2017 and burnt to the ground. It was the last of four grain elevators in White Bear. Another perspective showing the lean on the Annex... flic.kr/p/2oYNQrM
In the small town of Inglis, Manitoba, a row of tall wooden elevators are lined up parallel to the railway tracks. This is the Inglis Grain Elevators National Historic Site of Canada - a rare surviving icon of prairie towns during the “golden age of grain.” The elevators, no longer in active use, are preserved as a historic site.

Built in 1910, the 40,000 gallon capacity Kenaston water tower is the oldest remaining tower in Saskatchewan. At the time of it's restoration in 2009 this tower was one of only five original towers still standing, and one of three towers that remain on the original building site.
In addition, of the 400 towers constructed in the province, the Kenaston tower is the only remaining "tapered" tower. The octagonal wood-frame structure once used to provide water for steam locomotive operation and were situated every 30-50 kilometres along early railway tracks in western Canada .
Today, only 13 towers remain standing on the prairies, from Manitoba to British Columbia, of which 6 are in Saskatchewan.
My first trip to Emerald Lake, but definitely will not be my last. Normally I won't photograph scenes with people in them, but this couple happened to photobomb my shot, and I kinda like it. They add some perspective to the scene, yet aren't overly intrusive in it. I hope he got the shot he was looking for. It is a beautiful location.

During its heyday Neidpath had four grain elevators, two of which still stand derelict today. Today, they look different. A wind storm took off the top of one of them, and damaged the other in 2021.
This image was the first I shot of the Neidpath duo. It means alot to me as I did a great deal of research to find them from an image of them that I saw here on Flickr. I enjoyed photographing Neidpath that day back in August of 2015. I’ve not returned since. Not that I don’t want to, life has just got in the way.
Along with Neidpath I shot roughly 30 plus elevators in 4 days or so. I had caught the bug. Since then I have traveled from BC to MB capturing many images of Grain Elevators, Ukrainian Churches, Railway Stations, Water Towers, Ghost Towns and various other structures on the Canadian Prairie.
My photographic journey started around 2009 and I have traveled many miles doing what I love to do. 15 years later I am not sure how much longer I can do this. Will 2024 be the last year I am able to get in the Jeep and drive thousands of kilometers across this great country? I’d like to hope that I can continue, but I’m not getting any younger.
So, where am I going with this. Well, right now I am in the preparation and planning stage of a major project. This will be a 365 Photo Project. A project of subjects that I have not yet photographed. My list of prospective subjects is growing, but nowhere near complete, yet. I hope to be on the road sometime around mid-May and have the last photo taken around mid to end of Oct. 365 photos of different subjects in 6 months is very doable if I plan it right. The key is to NOT retrace previous journeys and re-photograph something that I have already taken a shot of.
So why I am posting this verbal diarrhea you may ask? Well, I have a list of close to 2,000 subjects I’d like to photograph, but thought maybe I could enlist my Flickr friends to help me choose which ones to photograph.
The other part of the project could be for me to produce copies of my images in formats such as Calendars, Postcards, Christmas Cards and a Coffee Table Book. Lastly, I would love to build a website to display my work on, as well as Flickr. That work would come after my journey to photograph the subject matter this summer. This is something I have been thinking about for many years, and I feel now is the time to just get it done.
My camera kit has expanded recently and I am looking at acquiring a few other pieces to allow for different perspectives and compositions. More on that in the future.
So what have I photographed so far. Well, this photostream is a good star to see that, and you can view my other photostream here to see more… The Bear Den
So, what do you think? Would you have any suggestions? It would be great to hear your thoughts and opinions on this. I look forward to your input. Anywhere from AB to MB would be good.
PS: One last question? Which format do you like to see images displayed in? Colour, black and white, landscape format, original format, or square format? Or a combination of all of these?
