"Pelagia noctiluca"

The word 'Pelagia' refers to the fact that its entire life, including the reproductive phase, takes place in the pelagic (body of water) and never rests on the bottom; the word 'noctiluca' refers to the fact that it is phosphorescent in the dark.

A jellyfish that, with the increase in water temperature in the Mediterranean, appears on the coasts causing havoc among bathers due to its stinging properties. The danger lies in the filaments that can measure up to 10 metres long and a small brush with them is like giving you an electric shock.....

Whitewater Canal Lock in Metamora Indiana

The Whitewater Canal started construction in 1836 and opened in 1847. The 68 mile canal went from Lawrenceburg, on the Ohio River, upstate to Cambridge City. Later an 8 mile extension went north to Hagerstown and a 25 mile extension connected Lawrenceburg with Cincinnati. The system had 56 locks and 7 feeder dams. The Whitewater Canal was a financial disaster for the State of Indiana. The elevation changes required too many locks that slowed travel. Frequent floods washed out sections of the canal requiring expensive repairs. By the 1860's railroads doomed the Whitewater Canal

Abandoned Blue House, Whitewater Canal and Railroad

The foundation is failing under the empty blue house. Located in Metamora, Indiana which was platted in 1838. The Whitewater Canal operated from 1839 to 1865 In the 1860's the Whitewater Valley RR bought the bankrupt canal system. The railroad ran from Hagerstown, Indiana to Harrison, Ohio. The 1890's found the railroad in trouble and it was leased to the Big 4 Railroad. In the 1930's the Big 4 incorporated into its parent company the New York Central which merged with the Pennsylvania RR and became the Penn Central RR. Passenger service ended in the 1930's and the freight service ended in 1972. A small non profit railroad runs seasonal excursion trains from Connersville to Metamora to this day.

Marine reserves constitute a specific measure that contributes to achieving a sustained exploitation of resources of fishing interest, establishing specific protection measures in delimited areas of traditional fishing grounds.

The effect of a marine reserve is manifested by a significant recovery of the fishing grounds in which it is inserted due to the dispersion of the species whose reproduction has been protected in it.

The seabed of the Isla Hormigas Cabo de Palos Marine Reserve is in incredible health, in this area artisanal fishing coexists with the recreational activity of recreational diving, both are compatible and the result is that divers can enjoy the best diving in the Mediterranean and one of the best in the world and fishermen benefit from a very abundant fishing ground.

There are 12 Marine Reserves in Spain and there should be more. In this photo we can see two of the most characteristic specimens of the area, the Goldblotch grouper and the Dusky grouper.

"Oxynoe olivacea"

Oxynoe olivacea is a species of small green bubble snail or sea slug, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Oxynoidae.

Despite a superficial resemblance, this is not a nudibranch, it is a sacoglossan, and like other Oxynoe species, it has a small, fragile, bubble-shaped shell.

The emblematic species of the salt lagoon of the Mar Menor, such was their abundance that I remember as a child that they swam between your feet when you were bathing.

Nowadays you can spend hours and hours and days diving and not see a single specimen, a real disaster. ....

With the experience that diving gives you, you try to interact with the species to get as close as possible to them and get a good shot, but in the end you come to the conclusion that it's all up to them .....
This photo was taken in the waters off the island of El Hierro and we were lucky that it wanted to interact with my model and the dome of my house.

Con la experiencia que te da los buceos, uno intenta interactuar con las especies para aproximarte los mas posible a ellos y conseguir un buen disparo, pero al final llegas a la conclusión que todo depende de ellos....

Gran encuentro

After spawning and caring for her offspring, the female octopus stops feeding, becoming so weakened that she isapproaching her final moment, and here you can see that moment with the colour.
It is not normal to see octopuses of this size in the Mediterranean due to fishing pressure, only in Marine Reserves such as Tabarca Island can we see them like this.
