St. Ladislau's Chapel

St. Ladislau's Chapel. Old Town Hall.

The Medieval Chapel of the municipal council, known as "heiltum," is located above the gate to the Town Hall and is dedicated to King Ladislaus, the patron saint of Hungary. It was built shortly before 1443 when the municipal council welcomed Denis, the Archbishop of Gran (Esztergom).

The original decoration, featuring figures of two saints, likely Emericus and Nicolaus, is still partially visible on the walls of the east-facing altar niche. Above the altar, the keystone is adorned with an idealized portrait of Saint Ladislaus.

A Gothic diptych of South German origin, dated to the mid-15th century, is installed on the altar. Its panels depict the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and St. John, as well as St. Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, alongside St. Catherine and St. Barbara. In this representation, St. Anne is shown with the young Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus on her lap.

The tiled stove bearing the town's coat of arms dates from 1872, when the room underwent a meticulous restoration. It was designed by Josef Könyöki (Ellenbogen), the first custodian of the City Museum.

Vaulted Ceiling

The ceiling of the Court Room in the Old Town Hall.

In 1674, the hall was painted white, and during the final decade of the 17th century, the ceiling was vaulted. Italian maestro Bastiano Corati-Orsati richly decorated the vaults with stucco. In 1695, Johann Jonas Drentwett from Augsburg painted a scene of the Last Judgment in the central part of the vault. However, it is uncertain whether he was also the artist behind the wall decorations, which include the Judgment of Solomon and Themis, the Greek goddess of justice.
